$1 million win means Winston-Salem couple can take dream trip to see the Minnesota Twins and Vikings

Robert Kennedy of Winston-Salem said a $1 million lottery win means a dream trip to Minnesota to see his favorite sports teams.

“My wife and I are huge Twins and Vikings fans,” Kennedy said. “We started saving a while back when I won $1,000 on a lottery ticket, now this will really make the trip special.”

The financial analyst’s good fortune happened Tuesday evening when Kennedy stopped at the Circle K on West Clemmonsville Road in Winston-Salem and bought a $5,000 Loaded scratch-off ticket.

“For some reason I just felt drawn to the ticket,” Kennedy said. “I knew I won something right away, but I thought it was something small. I couldn’t believe it when I saw $1 million.”

Kennedy immediately shared the good news with his wife.

“She had just spent the night in the hospital with my mother-in-law,” Kennedy said. “When I showed her the ticket, she immediately perked up. It turned a bad day into a good one.”

Kennedy claimed his prize Wednesday afternoon at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. He had the choice of taking a $1 million annuity that has 20 payments of $50,000 a year or a lump sum of $600,000. He chose the lump sum. After federal and state tax withholdings he took home $424,503. In addition to the Minnesota trip, Kennedy plans to save for retirement.

“My friends always called me lucky,” Kennedy said. “I guess I really am. I married the right woman, I have two wonderful children and three grandchildren, and now this. This is the icing on the cake.”

The $10 ticket launched in May with four $1 million top prizes. One $1 million prize remains.

Ticket sales from games like $5,000 Loaded make it possible for the lottery to raise more than $700 million a year for education. For details on how lottery funds have made a difference in all of North Carolina’s 100 counties, click on the “Impact” section of the lottery’s website.

how come when I try to enter WIN IT ALL ticket numbers to collect points it sayz not reconized ?NC Lottery
Hi Gregory, Sorry about that! We are aware that some players are experiencing issues collecting Lucke-Rewards points from these new games. Our team has identified what's causing this and is working to get the fix up now. Please hold onto any tickets you have that were not accepted and try to scan them for points later this evening or tomorrow.

Congratulations! Miracles do come true! I'm always looking and praying for them in my life too! God bless you all!

I was looking at the SC lottery site and noticed that their highest priced ticket is ten dollars. Also, the top prize on most of the the five and ten dollar tickets is lower than the top prizes on the NC five and ten tickets.

@Timmy on the Powerball scam blog that you posted on 08-31-19. Yes South Carolina pays out a lot more frequently than it's sister to the North! As a matter of fact they set a record last year of raising 487.6 million for education while North Carolina raised 700 million. North Carolina tries to beat it's previous year's record every year and they do,but at the player's expense. South Carolina pays back 70.40% to the players (ranked 5th) vs North Carolina's 67.255 (ranked 18th) in the nation. The question is this-do you really play for education proceeds that are only 5% of the states budget or do you play for yourself? NCEL needs to realize that you can attract more flies with honey than you can with vinegar. Loosen up on those odds!

WHY doesn't the 'Check tickets' option on the app work after midnight? Actually more like 2 AM? Was checking tickets the other night, then it turned 2:00 and BAM! No more checking that night! Shouldn't the app be 24/7? Does it go off the air like TV stations used to sign off? NC Lottery
Hi Tim, lottery systems go down every night from 2 a.m. to 5 a.m. for routine maintenance. We apologize for any inconvenience this causes -- hopefully you can remember to check them before/after this time window!

Thank you Denver, indeed it was the new tickets I tried to enter. I'll save them for next week. As far as letting poor people win, how in the world could they do that and maintain the integrity of the lottery? And who decides who is poor and who isn't?

LZ, the message is "Entry not recognized. Please check the numbers and try again" . That is because they are 1st Tuesday tickets. No big deal, it happens every month when stores receive and display tickets sooner then the actual 1st Tuesday. Happy Holidays and good luck guys n gals. NC Lottery
Happy holidays to you too!

Tim, a financial analyst is just a fancy term for someone who works in a bank or insurance office. Mainly they just try to advice people on what to do with their money to save for retirement and such. Trust me their salary makes them far from being rich. The jest of the story was his wife spent the night in the hospital with her mom. He stated that they had been saving up for this trip. Don't begrudge them this good fortune, her mom might be really sick and need support............

John the new tickets (win it all) that are to debut Tuesday will not be accepted till 9/3. I am guessing stores got them early cause of holiday weekend. The stores in my area got them yesterday. LZ, not a good answer you gave John. ALL tickets, whether draw or scratchers have a Lucke-rewards entry code on them. NC Lottery
Corrected our response, thanks Denver

Can you tell me why my scratch off tickets are not being accepted for points? NC Lottery
Hi John! We're sorry you're having trouble. What is the error message you're receiving so we can better assist you?

congratulations, enjoy the Vikings and Twins. I do have to say that it's another Rich person that has won, I rarely see a truly poor person win. Another thing is that when the lottery came to NC, it was supposed to help education, meaning it was to help teachers, school supplies, students not being in debt for lunches that our taxes are suppose to cover, building schools and repairing them. Thats what I and many people thought, but apparently that's not the case. NC lottery, please allow the poor people win, not the people who already have money, otherwise the lottery IS a tax on poor people, because that's the overwhelming percentage of people who play. Thank you for hearing my rant and I apologize if I have offended anyone. NC Lottery
Tim, we're sorry to hear your concerns.Every lottery ticket has an equal chance of winning regardless of where it was purchased or who purchased it. As far as where lottery profits go, please visit this link for a full breakdown: nclottery.com/education

8/29/2019 01:16 - sharon e.

Never hear about any big wins in Mooresville NC makes you wonder if they actually know what stores to send them to always big wins in Raleigh and Greensboro Winston-Salem area but never in the iredell county areaNC Lottery
Hi Sharon, The lottery does not know or control where winning tickets end up--it's all a matter of luck! That said, we've certainly had big winners in the areas you mentioned, here's a quick search of some of those big winners: http://bit.ly/2L78MeB
