Wayne County Korean War veteran wins lottery five times in one drawing

Luck struck Navy veteran Add Lancaster of Pikeville not once, but five times, when he won five lottery prizes in one Cash 5 drawing, including the $163,634 jackpot.

“I wanted to shout, ‘Hallelujah!’ when I saw what I won,” Lancaster said, sticking his arms in the air. “I’ve been lucky my whole life, but I can’t believe this.”

The Korean War veteran’s good fortune started when he stopped at Wissam & Brothers Inc. on Fort Run Road in Pikeville and bought a Cash 5 ticket for Monday’s drawing. Lancaster used five sets of his own numbers and bought one ticket with five plays on it. He found out he won later that night.

“My wife writes down the numbers for me during the drawing,” Lancaster said. “When she handed me the paper, so I could check my ticket, I couldn’t believe it. One of my lines matched five numbers and the other ones matched four numbers. I started shouting, ‘I got it! I got it! I hit the lottery!’”

The line that matched all five numbers won a $163,634 Cash 5 jackpot, beating odds of one in 962,598. The lines that matched all four numbers won $250 each for a total of $1,000. They beat odds of one in 5,066.

He claimed his prizes Wednesday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After required state and federal tax withholdings, he took home $116,480. He plans to use some of the money to pay bills and do some home repairs.

Cash 5 is a statewide draw game that gives players the chance to win a jackpot every single night. Tickets cost $1 and players can buy tickets at most lottery retailers or through Online Play on the lottery’s website. The jackpot for tonight’s drawing is $110,000.

Ticket sales from draw games like Cash 5 make it possible for the lottery to raise more than $700 million a year for education. For details on how lottery funds have helped all of North Carolina’s 100 counties, click on the “Impact” section of the lottery’s website. https://www.nclottery.com.

@NC LOTTERY, was his additional $1000 lumped in with his grand prize and taxed accordingly? If so, it shouldn't have been. When I matched 4 out of 5 in the past on 3 separate occasions, each time I claimed it at the IGA tax-free. Under $600? Not reported. But he went and put all 5 sets of numbers on the same slip, which was a mistake. It should've been 5 separate Cash 5 slips with 1 set of numbers each. I rarely fill out slips with multiple sets of numbers because if you win, this might be the sort of problem you run into, no way to wiggle out of it. I know some winners just want the notoriety of being on this site, bragging about this big accomplishment, but it's better to play smart. Ever heard it's better for your left hand to NOT let your right hand know what it's doing? If it had been me, what you don't know won't hurt you.NC Lottery
That's right--the additional $1,000 that Add won was added to his total winnings and taxed accordingly.
