Kimberly Corns of Belews Creek is the winner of the Jan. 4 Carolina Cash 5 jackpot of $100,000.

Corns’ Quick Pick ticket matched all five numbers in the drawing, beating odds of 1 in 962,598. She bought her lucky ticket at 4 Brothers on Main Street in Walkertown.

Corns claimed her prize Thursday. After required state and federal tax withholdings, she took home $70,751.

Cash 5 is a statewide draw game that gives players the chance to win a jackpot every single night. Tickets cost $1 and players can buy tickets at most lottery retailers or through Online Play on the lottery’s website. The jackpot for Thursday’s drawing is $110,000.

Wow Dennis, if you knew it was a winner, why did you give it her to check it. You should have scratched off the bar code yourself, and did a scan on the self checkers yourself. smh!

I would like to ask about the required fed and NC state tax deductions. What is required to be taken out percentage wise? And also, why is it so difficult to get a reply to this question? I have emailed and used the chat box just to figure out this answer? Thanks NC Lottery
Hi Dion, that's a great question and I apologize for not being able to have it answered sooner. As you know the lottery is required by law to take out the minimum state and federal taxes on prizes. Our prizes are taxed at a 24% federal and 5.25% state rate. The federal withholding begins with all prizes of more than $5,000 and the state withholding begins with all prizes of $600 or more. So, for prizes of more than $5,000, both federal and state taxes are withheld. I hope this adequately answers your question, Dion.

Congratulations to Ms Corns and Sir I'm so happy you got your ticket back and claimed your winnings. Some people are just evil. I'm like you I sign my tickets the instant I know it's a winner. Then I enter them in the second chance drawing prior to cashing them in. Best of luck to all.

I'm not sure of all the legalities in this since she didn't actually get away with it but even if she escapes prosecution she should definitely lose her job! One thing I don't get. Dennis C said she scanned his ticket but no music. What happened there? I know players say it states 'report to Raleigh' but shouldn't the music still play?

I reported this on my lunch hour. I am sorry I used this site to discuss this but maybe others can be aware of what can happen. Thanks so much and congratulations to Ms. Corns on her 100K win.

Hi everyone, Our player's security is of utmost importance to us. We take reports of fraud very seriously and we have reported the incident mentioned in the comments to our security division for follow up and investigation. Specific locations will not be posted while the investigation is ongoing.

Let me explain Denver. I had already signed the ticket. I knew it was a winner. It was signed within seconds. I only showed it to them as I wanted them to know they sold a big winner. With that said, you are correct. Never let a ticket out of your hands. That one is on me. NC Lottery
Hi Dennis, Denver is right. But while we do offer self-checkers, please still report this incident. Our security staff has a detective program to try to identify potential fraud. Please call our security division at 1-888-732-6235 as soon as you can.

To Dennis again. Not saying you are older. That being said. There are people that pray for the elderly and people that prey on the elderly. Please don't wait to report this. Anyway you could tell us exactly where this alleged incident took place? Sorry I had to use the term alleged.

Wow Dennis C. I am so glad it ended well for you. Sad to say there are scammers everywhere, on both sides of the counter. What made her think she could get away with it? You left many details out of your story. I would have snapped a pic and been over the counter. Never ever give a big winning ticket to some one else to check, that's why there are self checkers!

That makes me mad too. I hope there is video of that incident. Criminal charges are in order if it can be proven.

Yesterday I won $10K on the Loaded With 10000s card. Exciting. I went into the store and told the lady "look what you sold me". She looked hard at the ticket, scratched off the bar code and acted like she scanned it. No win music played and she said "Sorry, no winner" and acted like she was throwing it away. I said to give me my card. I told her it was a 10K winner and she said she must have read the screen wrong. Im cashing it in on Monday and will be reporting these thieves. From total bliss to anger in two minutes flat.NC Lottery
Dennis, We are disappointed to hear that this happened to you, but we are glad that you shared this with us. Please reach out to our security division at 1-888-732-6235 to report what happened. They will gather more info and conduct an investigation.
