Burke County woman wins $110,000 Cash 5 jackpot

Sharon Cline of Burke County said winning the lottery seemed to be a pipe dream until it all came true with Tuesday’s Cash 5 jackpot of $110,000.

“You spend a couple of dollars and it’s a pipe dream,” Cline said Friday as she collected her prize. “But then it happens, and it is surreal. I said to my husband the next morning, ‘Did I dream that last night or did it really happen?’”

What happened on Wednesday when Cline returned to where she bought her Quick Pick ticket the day before, Hildebran Shell on Old N.C. 10, is she learned the store had sold the winning Cash 5 ticket in Tuesday’s drawing. She checked her ticket and saw she was the winner.

“I thought, ‘Oh, my,’” said Cline, an upholstery sewer. “Just utter shock.”

After required state and federal tax withholdings, Cline took home $77,825.

“Just help some people out,” she said of her plans. “It will benefit people who are in need.”

Cash 5 is a statewide draw game that gives players the chance to win a jackpot every single night. Tickets cost $1 and players can buy tickets at most lottery retailers or through Online Play on the lottery’s website. The jackpot for Sunday's drawing is $204,000.

Can the lottery please let us have the option of cashing 600 dollars winning tickets at the retailers as there is no tax implications.NC Lottery
We hear you, Samuel. It's state law, not lottery policy, that requires prizes of $600 and up to be taxed. Since lottery winnings are considered income, certain forms must be completed in order to ensure that winners have all of the documentation they need come tax time.

Im not understanding why I can't register in the resolution January drawing in luk rewards. The game runs to the end of January right. When I go to it the screen goes to the weekly drawing. NC Lottery

Great to hear these winning stories, it keeps me going for sure! I play Cash5 with my same numbers for about 10 years now. Have hit four of five three times in this period. Do I complain? Absolutely not! The NCEL is a game of chance, in no way is my weekly ticket taking away from my responsibilities. I play for fun and I enjoy it. Will I ever win who knows? It's luck of the draw. All the complainers are what is ruining the lottery, no one wants to hear sob stories. THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE FOR FUN!!

WOW! Maybe @ALICIA D needs to check this out. Monday night the Pick 3 was 349. Tuesday afternoon it was 394! HUH?????!!!!! Keep in mind, this is nothing new. Also, as of this writing, the last 5 Pick 4 draws have ALL started with 8! 8!!!!! So, you'd better go play 8888 before it's locked out! LOL. Smh.

@ALICIA D.: Sorry to hear you didn't have more luck, Alicia. We wanted to take a minute and share some information about how the odds work with everyone here on the blog. Odds of 1:4 tells us that 25% of all of the tickets for that game are winning tickets. What it doesn't tell us is where you might find those winning tickets. Every pack of tickets has a unique mix of winning and non-winning tickets and due to this randomness, it's entirely possible for there to be several winning or non-winning tickets in a row. All of our games undergo a post-game audit to ensure that the odds were as advertised.

I’m writing because I’m extremely annoyed by the lack of honesty when it comes to the scratch off games. I recently purchased 20 (twenty) consecutive tickets of the new $1 Lucky 7’s game, and out of those tickets, only ONE (1) was a winner (worth only $2). What is the point of writing the overall odds in the back of the ticket if they’re not true. Between these scratch offs, 3 years of playing the SAME Cash 5 numbers (and winning no more than $1 every 10-20 draws), and almost 3 years of lotto entry drawings and winning nothing, I’m really starting to agree with others when they say these games are rigged and/or a scam.
