Robeson County man collects his share of $986,523 Cash 5 jackpot

Frank Walters of St. Pauls says it “feels good’ to take home a share of a $986,523 Cash 5 jackpot.

Walters purchased his Quick Pick ticket for the Oct. 5 drawing through Online Play on the lottery’s website. He checked his NC Lottery Official Mobile App a couple of days later and found out he’d won.

“I was excited,” said Walters.

Walters was one of three lucky winners who matched all five numbers in the drawing, beating odds of 1 in 962,598. Each winner won a third, $328,841.

He claimed his prize Wednesday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After required federal and state tax withholdings, he took home $232,655.

Walters said that with this money he’d help his daughter and pay some bills. “Pay off a lot of stuff,” he said.

Carolina Cash 5 tickets are $1 and drawings are held every night. Friday’s jackpot is $110,000. Cash 5 is one of four lottery games in North Carolina where players have the option of buying their tickets either through the lottery’s website or with the NC Lottery Official Mobile App.

Ticket sales from draw games like Cash 5 make it possible for the lottery to raise more than $725 million per year for education. For details on how $9.8 million raised by the lottery made a difference in Robeson County in 2019, visit and click on the “Impact” section.

I have been so close to hitting the cash 5 in NC but always one number off. One night I had 7,14,21,32,35 but the winning numbers were 13,14,21,32,35 n then one time I had 4,17,20,27,31 but the winning numbers were 7,17,20,27,31 it just seems odds are much higher than other places that's y I think it's so hard to win with your own numbersNC Lottery
Hi Schmeka, No matter if you choose your own numbers or go with a Quick Pick, your odds of winning the Cash 5 will always be the same. We wish everyone could be a big winner, but it's important to remember that it takes a lot of luck to win a prize of any size.

Nc lottery I have a question has there been been the same cash 5 numbers drawn before it a possibility that that can happen. NC Lottery
Hi Schmeka, It's certainly possible that the same Cash 5 numbers may get drawn more than once. Each drawing is an independent event, so that means that each combination has the exact same chance of being drawn today as it does tomorrow - 1 in 962,598. For example, 1-2-3-4-5 could be drawn today, and tomorrow it has the exact same odds of being drawn again today. We can't say for sure which numbers may have been drawn more than once, but you can certainly email and someone from our team will investigate further and see if we can't find that info out for you.

This morning I went to the store like I do every morning, and won 300 bucks on the Extreme Cashword. I went to Food Lion and cashed it in. When I got in the car, the song playing on the radio was that old song MONEY! MONEY! MONEY! That was cool!NC Lottery
Sounds like it was meant to be! Congrats on the win, John!

Why is the winning amount only showing $71,000 from the drawing on Friday October 16th ? There was 1 winner and jackpot was $110,000 and winning Cash 5 jackpot is supposed to be $100,000 when it’s won and reset . So i am confused to what’s going on ?NC Lottery
Sorry about that, Scott! You're absolutely right, the jackpot is always $100,000 or more. Looks like we had a small website error, but it should be corrected now.
