Cabarrus County man bags $1 million Mega Millions win

The Dec. 15 Mega Millions drawing produced a $1 million prize for Mark Hatley of Concord.

Hatley bought his winning Quick Pick ticket at the Carolina Fast Mart on N.C. 49 North in Concord.

His win became the third time in three weeks, and the second Tuesday in a row, that a ticket in North Carolina won a $1 million prize in the game.

Hatley claimed his prize Tuesday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After required federal and state tax withholdings, he took home $707,501.

His $2 ticket matched the numbers on all five white balls to beat odds of 1 in 12.6 million. The odds of winning a Mega Millions jackpot are 1 in 302.5 million.

Tuesday’s jackpot stands at $330 million as an annuity prize, or $252.8 million cash.

Players can try their luck and buy $2 Mega Millions tickets at any lottery retail location or through Online Play on the lottery’s website, www.nclottery.com, or with the NC Lottery Official Mobile App.

Mini states allow winners to be anonymous in North Carolina should be that way as well.NC Lottery
Hi Rene, it's a North Carolina law, not a lottery rule, that some information be made public about who wins lottery prizes as a matter of keeping the public confidence that real people are winning the prizes. Only a handful of states have laws that allow lottery winners to claim anonymously.

NCEL, do winners (excluding Powerful and Mega millions) have the right to remain anonymous if they win a large sum of money via scratchoffs, lucky for life etc. I noticed a lot of winners names are mentioned.NC Lottery
Hi Sheila, in North Carolina, a big winner's ($600 or greater) name, hometown, game played and amount won are all public information required to be released by law. While we love when a winner wants to take a photo, it is not required. Transparency and trust that the lottery is being run fairly is essential to our mission, and knowing that real people win real prizes plays a major part in that.
