Union County man ended 2020 with a $1 million prize

Kostyantyn Kornivskyy of Weddington in Union County ended the year 2020 by claiming a $1 million prize he won instantly.

Kornivskyy bought his lucky $10,000,000 Colossal Cash scratch-off at the Market Express on Old Monroe Road in Matthews.

He claimed his prize Tuesday and had a choice of taking an annuity of $50,000 a year for 20 years or a lump sum payment. He chose the lump sum and after state and federal tax withholdings took home $388,500.

Ticket sales from scratch-offs make it possible for the lottery to raise more than $725 million per year for education.

I was thinking like the others here about his bottom line...seemed rather low compared to the other lump sums but the explanation given works.

The 40% difference between the lump sum and the annuity represents the difference that interest would make if the lump sum sat in the bank for 20 years, so over the long term they are approximately the same.

Congratulations to the winner! I am just wondering why the winner’s take-home amount was lower than usual. My understanding is that the lump-sum option is $600k and after the mandatory withholding it is usually around $423k. Did the withholding limit change or did the winner request a higher withholding? Just curious...NC Lottery
