Guadalupe Hernandez Aguilar of Seven Springs took a chance on the new 50X The Cash scratch-off ticket and won the first $1 million top prize in the game.

Aguilar bought the lucky $10 ticket at the Sunoco on Ramsey Street in Fayetteville.

He had a choice of an annuity prize paid out as $50,000 a year over 20 years, totaling $1 million, or he could choose a lump sum of $600,000. Aguilar chose the lump sum when claiming his prize at lottery headquarters in Raleigh on Friday. After required tax withholdings, he took home $388,500.

50X The Cash launched this month and offers even more ways to multiple your winnings!

Players can win $1 million instantly, as Aguilar did, or win up to $100,000 by entering their 50X The Cash tickets into second-chance drawings. Three $1 million prizes remain to be claimed instantly and four $100,000 prizes can be won in second-chance drawings. The entry deadline for the first drawing is March 31.

I don't think it was necessary to say the winner was not a citizen. The winner had to reveal his name and with the way some Americans view brown foreigners negatively. I don't think it was helpful.NC Lottery
Thanks for the feedback, Doris.

@Jim B That’s the same tax they charge U.S. Citizens as well NC Lottery will find any excuse the not have to payout $$$. Better off in South Carolina. “Congratulations Mr.Auguilar” better leave N.C before they find another reason to come for some more taxes.NC Lottery
Hi Brent, U.S. Citizens who win lottery prizes are taxed at a different rate of 25% for federal and 5.25% for state. Taxes from lottery winnings to not go back to the lottery - they are considered income and are paid to the IRS just like your paycheck would be.

Why only 388,500 net after taxes? Should have been closer to 424,500 net. Tax rate change or something personal? NC Lottery
Hi Jim, The winner is not a U.S. citizen, so they were subject to a 35% tax withholding.
