Gary Heafner of Leland said ‘special numbers’ led him to winning half of Monday’s Cash 5 jackpot of $580,800.

Heafner stopped by the Circle K on 17th Street in Wilmington and bought one of two tickets that matched all five winning numbers in Monday’s drawing.

The other lucky ticket was sold at the Fast Stop on North Alston Avenue in Durham. The winner has 180 days to claim the prize.

Heafner claimed his half of the jackpot, $290,400, on Tuesday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh.  After required state and federal tax withholdings, he took home $205,458.

Cash 5 is a statewide draw game that gives players the chance to win a jackpot every single night. Tickets cost $1 and players can buy tickets at most lottery retailers or through Online Play on the lottery’s website. The jackpot for Tuesday’s drawing is $100,000.

What happens to the other half of the money if that ticket holder does not come forward. Does he go to Mr. Hefner as the winning ticket holder? Just curious?? NC Lottery
Hi Janiffaa. Good question! The player would have 180 days to claim that Cash 5 prize. If they don’t, half the money goes to education and half would go into the unclaimed prizes fund to be used for other player prizes like Lucke-Rewards.

ooh! Congratulations!! If I ever win, (knock on wood), I would use the money to helping restore mom's mid century house, and keep the rest for my "early" retirement. I am so happy for you and hope I will be next!

Why does where the numbers came from matter? Numbers from birthdays, anniversaries, or a number generator all have exactly the same odds of winning.

What are the 'special numbers'? Why so vague and no further information? I assume it's the usual birthdays and anniversaries but for all I know he might have gotten them off a number generator or something. NC Lottery
Hi Tim, we love hearing the stories behind the winners that come into our office to claim their prize, but we don't require them to share any additional info if they don't want to. So in this case we don't know why the numbers were special to him. All we know is he was really happy he used them, and those numbers ended up getting him a win!
