$200,000 ‘Mega’ win means no more mortgage

For Robert Hinnant of Rocky Mount, a $200,000 ‘mega’ win means no more mortgage payments.

“It’s exciting,” said Hinnant. “It’s unbelievable.”

Hinnant, a retiree, said his good luck means he can pay off his mortgage and take a vacation.

The big win came with a $5 Mega Bucks ticket Hinnant purchased at the 301 Convenient Mart on North Wesleyan Boulevard in Rocky Mount.

Hinnant claimed his prize Friday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After required state and federal tax withholdings, he took home $141,501.

I noticed this person won 200,000 and lost about 30% in taxes. But when a winner won 1 million they lost over 50% in taxes. Does more you win put you in a higher tax bracket?NC Lottery
Thanks for asking, John. All lottery wins above $5,000 are taxed the same: 24% for federal and 5.25% for state. The reason $1 million scratch-off winners typically end up taking home less than 50% of the $1 million is because they chose the lump sum option. Those winners have the choice of receiving $50,000 payments over 20 years totaling $1 million, or a lump sum of $600,000. Taxes are then withheld from whichever option they choose. When they choose the lump sum, after taxes they end up taking home around $424,000. Hope this helps clarify!
