Greenville tax preparer gets ‘colossal’ refund from scratch-off ticket

March 17, 2020 Posted by NC Lottery at 1:41 PM

Kelcey Holley, a Greenville tax preparer tried his luck on the $10,000,000 Colossal Cash scratch-off and got a nice return in the shape of a $1 million prize.

“I couldn’t believe it” said Holley. “I still can’t believe it. I’m very happy.”

Holley stopped at the Sheetz located on County Home Road in Greenville to buy the $30 ticket.

He sat on one of the stools outside to scratch the ticket and immediately got into his car and left for home when he realized he’d won $1 million.

“I got up and started looking around in disbelief,” said Holley. “When I got home, I put the ticket in my safe.”

Holley claimed his $1 million prize on Monday. He had the choice of an annuity prize paid out as $50,000 a year over 20 years or a lump sum of $600,000. He chose the lump sum and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $424,509.

“I plan on getting me and my wife a house,” he said, “and pay off our cars.”

The $10,000,000 Colossal Cash game started in August 2018 with four top prizes of $10 million and 16 $1 million prizes. Two $10 million prizes and five $1 million prizes remain to be won.

Players can win one of the $1 million prizes instantly, as Holley did, or by visiting the lottery’s website and entering their $10,000,000 Colossal Cash tickets into a second-chance drawing. One $1 million prize, three $10,000 prizes, and 25 $500 prizes will be awarded in the fourth of five second-chance drawings in the game. The deadline to submit your entry has not been determined yet.

Ticket sales from scratch-off games make it possible for the lottery to raise more than $700 million a year for education. For details on how lottery funds have helped all of North Carolina’s 100 counties, click on the “Impact” section of the lottery’s website.

I don't get why some people think that the lottery is just a scam that's rigged to reward the NCEL's executives. The average income of lottery employees is around $45k. The Chief Director/CEO makes around $250k which is quite a good income but it's not even close to CEO pay in other industries. And no one is rewarded for making sure that fewer people win. The NC Legislature sets up how much lottery money goes to schools and that's where a majority of lottery profits are profits go. No one in the lottery is cheating anyone.

NCEL staff, You commented below that "Lottery games are meant to be a fun form of entertainment." That isn't true, it is gambling which is why our laws had to be changed to allow the lottery. All games of chance that have odds, implied or not, are gambling. No matter how you sugar coat, it is gambling. I have to agree with Zachary regarding the winners are less than they used to be for the $30 tickets. You sales are likely going to go way down when all the layoffs kick in. You reap what you sow...enjoy!

After being in AZ for 2 weeks and playing their lottery, I see how absolutely horrible and close to scammish, the NC Lottery is. I purchased several, probably 8 or 9 $30.00 tickets. Of those, only TWO of them were none winning tickets. Now, back in NC, I purchase 3 consecutive, Extreme Cash tickets, and as you might guess not ONE is a winner!!! NC Lottery is all about putting money in their executives pockets, buying them beach houses, driving exotic cars and other lavish lifestyle affords. Schools don’t stand a chance. The lottery is supposed to be fun, but when you spend $75.00 and don’t win a penny, well that’s just a scam!!NC Lottery
Zachary, We've seen you comment a lot recently and in reading your comments, it sounds like you're frustrated. Lottery games are meant to be a fun form of entertainment, and we only want folks to play as long as they are enjoying themselves. If not, that's a great sign that you should stop playing.
