Stanly County man wins ‘$5,000,000 Fortune’

James Fleming Jr. of Albemarle saw his $20 scratch-off ticket turn into a $5 million top prize.

Fleming purchased his lucky $5,000,000 Fortune ticket at the Food Lion on U.S. 52 North in Albemarle.

Fleming claimed his prize Monday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. He had the choice of taking the $5 million as an annuity of $250,000 a year over 20 years or a lump sum of $3 million. Fleming chose the lump sum and after required state and federal tax withholdings, he took home $2,122,506.

$5,000,000 Fortune launched in August 2019 with three top prizes of $5 million and six $100,000 prizes. One $5 million prize and four $100,000 prizes remain to be claimed.

I was told that if you a prize over $600, and you go to cash it in the state can take it if you owe hospital bills. Yay, or nay?NC Lottery
Great question, Delores. If a person owes a debt to a state agency or a local government agency, then that debt can be collected out of lottery prize as the winner is paid. This only applies to debts that are considered "delinquent", meaning that the person who owes the debt is behind on payments. As long as you keep up-to-date with payments for any debts that you owe, they will not factor in to your lottery winnings if you were to win. just played and won a fat zero. lol also i have been entering the May monthly drawing all month and today it says i have 0 entries. either the web site is screwed up or we need new tecks to keep it going right. entering tickets and scratch offs also gives you funny replies. not all the time but now and then.NC Lottery
