Mother’s Day is the one day each year that the mom in your life should be spoiled a little extra. Some moms like flowers, some prefer breakfast in bed or even jewelry, and a special few dream of Mother’s Day bringing them a chance at a big win.
It’s no secret that moms are some of the most deserving people there are. And moms that win the lottery are no exception.
In honor of Mother’s Day, check out our five favorite ‘mom’ wins:
Mother’s Day 2019 turned into a day Vielka Roman of Autryville will never forget after her sister’s present to her turned into a $1.3 million Cash 5 jackpot. On the morning of Mother’s Day, Vielka, her fiancé, Al, and her sister, Neris, all went out to celebrate the holiday. After dinner, they stopped for groceries. “Carolina Cash 5 is her favorite game,” said Neris. “So I bought her the lucky ticket as a Mother’s Day present.” When Vielka checked her numbers the next day, her sister was the first person she called. “I think everyone would like to have a sister like her,” said Neris. “She has always been there for me. And when she won she said to me, ‘If I win, then you also win.’”
Jacqueline Carpenter of Dallas won a $100,000 lottery prize when her son gave her a scratch-off ticket on New Year’s Day. Her son, Adrian, was on his way to check on his mom after a hunting trip when he stopped to pick up a few BIG SPIN scratch-off tickets. “It’s a heck of a way to start 2020,” he said. “She was ecstatic. She was literally floating. It gave me pure joy to see her so happy.” Jacqueline said she doesn’t have much that she wants or needs, and planned to use her prize money to help take care of her family. “That’s what she thinks,” Adrian responded. “I’m not going to take a penny. She deserves to keep everything for herself.”
A trip to the convenience store for apple juice turned into a $100,000 win for Charles Martin of Gastonia after he decided to get a Millionaire Bucks scratch-off ticket. Martin, a metal shop worker, got the winning ticket when he stopped to buy apple juice during his lunch break. When he went back to work, he scratched it off. “I was like, ‘Wow,’” he said. “I couldn’t believe it. I stared at the numbers, expecting them to change.” He planned to get something nice for his mom and put the rest of the money in savings.
Dianetta Foye of Smithfield calls her daughter a lucky charm after she helped her win a $200,000 lottery prize. “She’s the only reason I won,” she said. “I’m so grateful to her.” Her good fortune started when her adult daughter asked for a scratch-off ticket. She stopped by the GT Mart on Wilson’s Mills Road in Smithfield and bought a ticket for her daughter. She also bought a $5 Win It All ticket for herself. She couldn’t wait to bring it home, so she scratched it in the store. “I saw the numbers and couldn’t believe it,” Dianetta said. “I looked at the ticket and thought, ‘That can’t be $200,000.’ I couldn’t say anything. I was speechless.”
On Mother’s Day in 2013, Brandy Hatcher of Wilmington learned that she was expecting her first child. Exactly one year later, she purchased a $4,000,000 Gold Bullion ticket that would go on to win her $1 million. “I had just gone to the store to buy mints and decided to try a ticket on the way out,” Brandy said. “I really couldn’t believe it. Between last Mother’s Day and this one, I don’t think it could get much better.” When she claimed her prize, Brandy said she planned to use the money to purchase a car and save for her daughter’s college education.
