Alamance County man scores $1,067,233 Cash 5 jackpot

Dennis Burnette of Graham’s good fortune won him a $1,067,233 Cash 5 jackpot.

Burnette purchased his lucky Cash 5 ticket from Garrett Road Family Fare on Durham-Chapel Hill Boulevard in Durham.

His ticket matched all five winning numbers in June 8 drawing to beat odds of 1 in 962,598.

Burnette claimed his prize Thursday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After federal and state taxes, he took home $755,068.

Cash 5 is a statewide draw game that gives players the chance to win a jackpot every single night. Tickets cost $1 and players can buy tickets at most lottery retailers or through Online Play on the lottery’s website or the N.C. Lottery Official Mobile app.

The jackpot for Thursday’s drawing is $696,000.

if this is accurate will you people please update the damn front page, it's showing 1 million jackpot for saturday june 20th on the cash 5. What has happened to this operation. The new app doesn't work, people losing their 2nd chance points and now you can't even get the jackpots correct. NC Lottery

That's how I do when the Cash 5 is over $400,000. I drive to different neighboring Towns hoping luck will strike one of those stores.

There are never any big prize winners who purchase online. Online play probably rakes in millions for the State, but pays out almost nothing. $1, $5 - maybe $10. You should post entire lists of winners and how they won but you won't do that because then your cash cow of online players would dwindle. The worst part is that these are people who can least afford to lose the money - rich people don't buy lottery tickets. It reminds me of the movie "The Island" where those poor people think they going to live on some beautiful island when they win the lottery, but instead, they are only organ donors for other people.

Congrats! I would just love to win enough to be debt free (no student loan, car payment, etc.) and be able to start from scratch. Okay....MAYBE have a little leftover for a family vacation as well. :-)

Nothing has changed here, William. At this time, your Lucke-Rewards points do not expire, so you can use them as you see fit. You can save them up, spend them all on one drawing you've had your eye on, or use them little by little. The choice is yours.

my pick 3 tickets have never shown up expired as i have hundreds of them and enter them manually depending on what kind of shape my fingers are in. sometimes a few at a time. This week it is showing expired and it has really frustrated me when i enter and find them expired. a LITTLE heads up that this was going to happen i would have had my grand kids enter them. Hi William, Draw game tickets expire 180 days after the drawing, so if it has been longer than that time frame, you might receive the 'ticket expired' message. However, if your ticket is within 180 days, you should not be receiving this message and should still get your points. No worries LZ. I took full advantage of the May promo for extra points for online play. I got a few of my favorite numbers for the max 90 days. so I am good to go. I love buying multi draw tickets. Just thought I might want to by extra when in PA, if jackpot continues to keep growing. Will buy a few extra b4 I leave :-).

Quick question: Should I ever find myself winning something, is an actual social security card required at the claim center or are alternatives (passport, etc) allowed? NC Lottery
Hey Roger, Our system has the ability to do a lookup through the IRS, so if you don't have your social security card on-hand, it's no problem. Please note that you would still need to bring a form of ID that verifies your name, signature and age.

Hey Denver, Technically you're correct - you'll need to be anywhere within the state in order to purchase, but you do have the option to get your tickets in advance before you leave so that you don't have to worry about missing your favorite games while you're away.

Why don't the lottery distribute the money around so there will be more winners. A lot of people have lost jobs. Be more compassionate. Instead of the state shutting down the sweepstakes, the lottery should be shut down too if they don't do better. I know my comment will not be posted NC Lottery

That said, we wanted to let you know that ticket distribution is a controlled and secure process and the tickets are sent out at random. The lottery does not know where the winning tickets are until the lucky winner comes in to claim their prize.
