Hacene Talbi of Cary scored the top prize on a 50X The Cash scratch-off to win $1 million.

Talbi purchased his lucky $10 ticket from the Quality Mart on Chapel Hill Road in Raleigh.

He claimed his prize Monday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. Talbi had a choice of taking the $1 million as an annuity of $50,000 a year over 20 years, or a lump sum of $600,000. He chose the lump sum and after state and federal tax withholdings, he took home $424,503.

50X The Cash launched in February with four top prizes of $1 million. One top prize remains to be won.

All Multiply the Cash games can also be entered into second-chance drawings on the lottery’s website. Prizes in the drawing include one $100,000 cash prize, eight $5,000 cash prizes, and 25 $500 cash prizes.

Congrats to you. But them taxes are ridiculous. The scratch off should be called HALF A MILLION??????NC Lottery
Hi Howard, We responded to another player with a similar comment, and wanted to share it with you here as well. All big lottery wins are considered income and are taxed at the minimum state and federal rates of 5.25% and 24%. The reason that this player took home $424K is because he chose the lump sum option of $600,000 instead of the 20 year annuity of $1 million. No matter which option a winner chooses, minimum taxes are still withheld.

A white male said something interesting to me today when I told him the winner of the Cash 5 was from towards the mountains and i said every time the jackpot gets really big, it never comes from our area. His retort was, the reason is the area is too diverse, too many black people and they gotta make sure the winner come from a predominately white area. i thought that was a interesting take i would share. NC Lottery
Folks from all walks of life have won the lottery. A winning ticket has no idea who is going to buy it, and does not make decisions on who is more deserving to win. Players can pick their numbers from anywhere. Someone in the mountains can pick the same numbers as someone at the beach. Same goes for a big city or a small town. For draw games, your odds are based off the total number of possible combinations, and the lottery can't control who picks which numbers.

How can the taxes be more than you win, that should not be. I hear a lot of people say the same.NC Lottery
