Wake County man jokes he ‘might just splurge for a Happy Meal’ after $100,000 win

July 16, 2020 Posted by NC Lottery at 2:40 PM

Phillip Werling of Wake Forest kept his sense of humor after winning a $100,000 Ruby Red 7’s prize, saying the first thing he planned on doing is going to, “splurge for a Happy Meal.”

Werling purchased his lucky $20 ticket from the Food Lion on U.S. Highway 1 North in Youngsville.

He took his ticket back home where he scratched it. “Oh, I was excited,” said Werling. “I don’t think it’s truly sunk in yet.”

Werling claimed his prize Wednesday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After federal and state tax withholdings he took home $70,756.

Ruby Red 7’s launched in January with four top prizes of $4 million and eight prizes of $100,000. Two top prizes and four $100,000 prizesremain to be won.

I wouldn't make a blog about it either if it were my business because it would show most people in the great state of NC they're donating to the areas dictated by the NC lottery. Those smaller areas if smart would wake up and quit funding this scheme.

You blog a lot about why not make a story showing the facts for everyone. Add a picture of the great state of NC and include total sales and payouts for the areas to show people their true very very low chances of winning in certain areas.NC Lottery
Hi NC! We're happy to share that sales info with anyone who is interested. All you have to do is email with your specific request including info like which games and the date range you'd like to see and our team would be happy to provide it to you.

NC Lottery in response to Charles H. you say there are lots of great winners all across our great state so you have this data available. To be open and transparent could you list the percentage of winners in different locations across our great state to show your consumers those facts to match your comment?NC Lottery
Hey there NC, We absolutely have that data available. Just email your specific request to and our team will work to put together a report for you.

Wake County again. Something is seriously wrong with this picture. The ratio of top prizes winners coming from Wake is too many to be a coincidence. I have no doubt that the NCEL knows where the big winner scratch-offs are going before they're distributed. A few years ago, a Wake County man won the top prizes on a $5.00 ticket. I believe it was $150,000 or $200,000 and he won the top prizes in the cash 5 drawing the same night. You think about that now. NC Lottery
Hi Charles, we wanted to let you know we don’t know where the winning tickets will be and it's no easier to win the lottery in once place over another. Population hubs, having more people, will have more players, so, more winners over time. That said, we've seen lots of winners from all across our great state.

Wake County again ?!?!NC Lottery
Population hubs, having more people, will have more players, so, more winners over time. The triangle is simply highly populated and has lots of people playing the lottery. If you live in this area it is not easier to win. No matter where you live you have the same chance to beat the odds as anyone else.
