Randolph County woman buys ‘lucky’ ticket, bags $200,000 prize

A trip to visit her brother led Hortencia Martinez of Asheboro to a $200,000 Lucky 7 Bonus top prize.

While en route on Friday, Martinez stopped at Mario’s Deli & Grill on Eagle Rock Road in Wendell and tried her luck on two $5 Lucky 7 Bonus tickets.

Once at her brother’s house, she scratched her tickets and found herself a winner.

“I was in disbelief,” said Martinez. “My brother didn’t say anything. He just couldn’t believe it.”

Martinez claimed her prize Monday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After required federal and state withholdings, she took home $141,501.

As for her prize money, Martinez says she’s “planning on saving it.”

Are illegal immigrants allowed to win top prizes? If they are then something needs to change.NC Lottery
Folks from other states and other countries are certainly eligible to play and win the lottery as long as they purchased their tickets while in NC. As long as the player is over the age of 18, they are allowed to play our games.

The winners map is very misleading. It makes it look like the winning ticket was sold in Randolph Co. when in fact it was sold in Wake! Just another of way of trying to skew the areas of where the winnings tickets are sold. Is this how all the winnings tickets are shown on the map now, by which country the winner lives and not by which county the ticket was sold in? So, which is it ? County sold or County the winners lives in? It needs to be one way or the other! Quit misleading the players ! You don’t want to tarnish the squeaky clean reputation of the NCEL do you?NC Lottery
Thanks for pointing that out, David. We did not intentionally try to skew any facts of the story by the placement of the pin on the map. We appreciate you mentioning this and we will work to be consistent on the placement.
