Johnston County man says $110,000 Cash 5 jackpot will help with retirement

Barry Batten of Four Oaks could hardly believe his eyes when he saw he was the winner of Wednesday’s $110,000 Cash 5 jackpot.

“It was just unbelievable,” he said.

After stopping for breakfast at Hardee’s, Batten purchased his lucky Cash 5 ticket for that night’s drawing at Brother’s Corner Mart on East Weeks Circle in Newton Grove.

“I was checking my tickets and I checked it like four times online,” recalled Batten. “Then got my phone out and scanned it. I couldn’t believe it.”

Batten, who works for a pharmaceutical company, claimed his prize Thursday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After required federal and state tax withholdings, he took home $77,827.

“Retirement is heavily on my mind,” said Batten. “So, it’s going to help me prepare better for retirement.”

Cash 5 is a statewide draw game that gives players the chance to win a jackpot every single night. Tickets cost $1 and players can buy tickets at most lottery retailers, through Online Play on the lottery’s website, or on the NC Lottery Official Mobile app.

Friday’s Cash 5 jackpot is $110,000.

Look at the July drawings as well-3 different times consecutive days have numbers that are very close. That isn’t by chance.....NC Lottery
Hey there Gretchen, We replied to your other comment below. :) It actually is all a matter of random chance! Every possible combination of numbers has a 1 in 962,598 chance of coming up in each drawing, but since drawings are independent events, the results of a previous drawing in no way affect the results of the next one.

Every possible combination of numbers has a 1 in 962,598 chance of coming up in each drawing, but since drawings are independent events, the results of a previous drawing in no way affect the results of the next one. In games where you can choose form a set amount of numbers, it’s no surprise that we see similar patterns come up every so often.

If a person owes a debt to a state agency or a local government agency, then that debt can be collected out of lottery prize as the winner is paid. It reduces the amount of prize money you get, but at the same time you get a debt that may have been worrying you paid off. This only applies to debts that are considered "delinquent", meaning that the person who owes the debt is behind on payments. As long as you keep up-to-date with payments for any debts that you owe, they will not factor in to your lottery winnings if you were to win.
