Coworkers share ‘ridiculous’ $4 million lottery prize

Dean Glover of Littleton and Willard Weber of Littleton tried their luck on some Ruby Red 7’s tickets and ended up splitting a $4 million top prize.

Glover and Weber, who have been coworkers at a welding company for over four years, purchased their tickets from Minit Chek on West Main Street in Littleton on Friday.

The next day, Weber had a store owner check the ticket for him.

“He told me I had to go to Raleigh,” said Weber. “I figured it was maybe $1,000 or $10,000, not what we had because that was ridiculous.”

After Weber discovered their good fortune, he called Glover.

“I told him I had some good news for him,” recalled Weber. “And he came right to my house after that,” said Glover.

The coworkers claimed their prize Tuesday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh.

They had the choice of taking the $4 million as an annuity of $200,000 a year over 20 years, or a lump sum of $2.4 million. They chose to split the lump sum, each getting $1.2 million. After required federal and state tax withholdings, they each took home $849,003.

With his half of the prize money, Weber said, “It’s going in the bank. I’m planning on buying an antique convertible car. That’s my main goal.”

Glover says his portion of the winnings is “going into savings” for his retirement.

Ruby Red 7’s launched in January with four top prizes of $4 million and eight top prizes of $100,000. One $4 million top prize and three $100,000 prizes remain to be won.

Looks like retirement will be a lot better for the winners!!!

I know I can see all of my historic entries but the dashboard is only supposed to show the current entries. Like I said I only have 680 current entries in the active second chance drawings. That is what should be displayed, not 8,623. The Rewards page is working correctly, I've redeemed over 40,000 points this year and Rewards is showing 1,000 current entries, which is correct because I'm only in 1 active Rewards drawing at this time.

Hey NCEL, how about fixing the Second Chance Draw History totals on our dashboards. Mine shows 8,623 entries when I only have 680. It looks like the expired drawings have not been marked as such in the database or the script is messed up again. Rewards history is working properly only showing my entries in active games.NC Lottery
Hi Mike, the Second Chance History should contain all your past drawing entries since we converted the system last year. If you click into a drawing, it should then narrow down to the entries for the specific drawing.

Hey Tiff! I have won before the tax situation will push you to a different bracket. So you might end up owning a little bit at the end of the year but it wasn't much I think my kids deductions/ donations covered the losses

Tiffany, you do not get taxed twice. NCEL takes required taxes out of your winnings and sends it to the IRS just like your paycheck, about 30%. NCEL will issue a W2G for. Say you make $50k a year and your employer takes out 30%, you about break even. But if you win $100k , now your income for this year is $150k. That might put you in a higher tax bracket, like 35%. So you MIGHT have to pay an additional 5%. But you are not taxed twice.

That tax literally kills the MILLIONSSS! Of course something is better than nothing but cut us poor folk that get lucky some slack. Uncle Sam took the initial joy I got from those guys winning. Maybe I will get to have some lottery winnings took from me one day lol.

Can someone who has won a nice top prize before let me know when it comes to filing taxes the following year does the lottery winngs get taxed hard again.NC Lottery
Hi Tiffany, everyone's tax situation is different, and we advise all winners of large prizes to speak to a tax professional when claiming.

8/05/2020 04:52 - cetoni J.

Why some people are taxed huge amounts on taxes and some people go slow on taxes? Being studying for a while now. Do the lottery offer attorney? Do you need an attorney to claim your price money and why?NC Lottery
Hi Cetoni, the tax rates are set at 24% federal and 5.25% state for all lottery players. We advise all winners to speak to a tax professional and attorney prior to claiming a big prize, but the lottery does not provide these services.
