Haywood County woman scores first $1,000,000 prize on new game

On Thursday, the new Carolina Black Millionaire Edition game delivered its first $1 million prize to Caterra Ponton of Clyde.

Her lucky ticket was purchased from J.D.’S Truck Stop Inc. on Crab Tree Road in Waynesville.

Ponton claimed her prize Thursday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. She had the choice of taking the $1 million as an annuity of 20 payments of $50,000 a year or a lump sum of $600,000. Ponton chose the lump sum and took home $424,503 after required state and federal tax withholdings.

Carolina Black Millionaire Edition launched this month with five top prizes of $1 million. Four top prizes remainto be won.

I bought this game a few times and they were all duds and hard to scratch. I always won on the $5 card, so I'm going to give this one a few more tries. . then back to the 50xs

Why wouldn’t the take home portion be $600k AFTER taxes? That’s ridiculous that she is getting less than 50% of what she won. Yes, any money is better than no money, but at what point are the fees and taxes enough?? Congrats to this winner....I just wish she could have gotten closer to what she actually won. NC Lottery
Hi Anna, winners are given the choice between a $1 million payment paid out over 20 years, or a lump sum. The $400,000 difference between the lump sum and the annuity would be earned on interest over the course of 20 years and used to pay out the $1 million prize to the winner.
