Guilford County man bags $4,000,000 prize

September 8, 2020 Posted by NC Lottery at 11:45 AM

Robert Carlton of Greensboro scored the $4,000,000 top prize when he tried his luck on a 100X The Cash scratch-off ticket.

Carlton purchased his lucky $20 ticket from Sandy Ridge Mart on Sandy Ridge Road in Colfax.

He claimed his prize Friday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. Carlton had the option of taking the $4 million as an annuity of $200,000 a year for 20 years or a lump sum of $2.4 million. He chose the lump sum and took home $1,698,006 after required federal and state tax withholdings.

The 100X The Cash game launched in March 2019 with four top prizes of $4 million and six prizes of $100,000. One $4 million top prize and two $100,000 prizes remain to be won.

Congratulations!! I can attest that I have bought tickets from one particular gas station and have won $500 on three separate occasions. I buy often from other stores and hardly break even. Not sure what that proves but just want to put it out there. NC Lottery
Congrats on your wins, Tracy!

Congratulations, I cant wait for the thrill of winning Lord when my online play pays off honey I'm going to dance all day long!!!

Play online and wait. They want your bank info, our S.S. number, a picture I.D. and a picture of a void check to even get a $200 winning ticket. You can walk into a store and get your $200 with no problem. I have been messing with this online win for over a week now and still no money!NC Lottery
Hey there Tammy, Congrats on your win! We're sorry to hear that your experiencing claiming has been frustrating. We have these extra safeguards in place to ensure that when we pay a prize out to someone, it is going to the correct person and account. It takes our team a little extra time to validate the information you upload. Once you complete this process, it shouldn't be necessary for any subsequent wins. If you have more questions about the status of your documents or prize, you can reach out to our online support team at

So NCEL you are saying you have 4 million and 10 million dollar prizes on tickets and no one knows what pack those winners are on. So if someone purchased the winning ticket and overlooked the winning number then put it in the trash no one would ever get that ticket. There have been several games that you all have ended with a top prize remaining. It is hard for me to believe no one knows these winning packs, however you are correct in saying you don't know the person until the prize is claimed.NC Lottery
It's entirely possible for that to happen, that's why we always encourage folks to double check their tickets using our ticket checker before discarding them!

While I hear you say "random distribution" I think the distribution of big winners seems to repeatedly occur in certain areas and cities. The occurrence does not look random to me.I am starting to lose trust in the randomness of the prize distribution. Does the random distribution mean all the big prizes could be distributed to one section of the state?NC Lottery
Ticket distribution is a secure process and no one knows where or when winning tickets will be bought until the lucky winner finds it. The News & Observer wrote an article detailing the process our lottery tickets take before they get to the store, you can read it here:

@ncel. If tickets are randomly distributed but seems to be many winners in certain counties, wouldn't you guys question it? If we see the pattern, shouldn't you guys see it as well?NC Lottery
If you look at any set of data close enough, you'd likely be able to find some sort of "pattern". For example, you could flip a coin 10 times and it might land on heads 8 times and tails 2 times. That doesn't mean that the odds of it landing on heads are 8 in 10 - that'll always be 50/50. It just means in that set of data, one thing happened more than another. But, if you were to flip the coin 1,000 times, you'd likely see that it lands on heads and tails more or less evenly. That's because you have to look at the bigger picture. There may be several winners in a specific area in a relatively short period of time, but if you look at the data over time, you'd see that our winners are distributed across the state more or less in proportion with the amount of people playing there.

This is the third big ticket WIN in Greensboro in a week, so I guess you all will say that more people in Greensboro are buying scratch offs. I have been going from store to store and still can't find even a $50 WIN. I know it takes luck, but some stores never get the good packs of tickets. I have played whole rolls and can't even break even.NC Lottery
Sorry to hear you haven't had more luck lately, Angela. But we wanted to let you know that we don't recommend playing the lottery by buying entire rolls of tickets. Winning tickets are distributed at random throughout the entire printing run of the game - not just within rolls. Each roll has a unique mix of winning and non-winning tickets and there is no guarantee you will find a big win on a roll. It's all a matter of random luck.
