$642,767 Cash 5 jackpot win leaves Craven County retiree feeling ‘blessed’

When the Cash 5 jackpot got above $500,000 Charlie Bennett of New Bern decided to try his luck at the jackpot and ended up taking home $642,767.

“I think it was at $500,000 on the 27th and so I said, ‘Well, it’s time to start playing again,’” recalled Bennett. “So, on the 28th I decided to go out and play.”

He purchased his winning Quick Pick ticket for the Dec. 28 drawing from the Super Stop on Neuse Boulevard in New Bern.

The next morning, Bennett woke up to celebrate his mother’s birthday and decided to check his tickets using his NC Lottery Official Mobile App.

“The first ticket I turned over was the winner,” he recalled. “It was pretty exciting.”

Bennett claimed his prize Friday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After required federal and state tax withholdings, he took home $454,760.

“I feel blessed,” he said of winning the jackpot. “I’ll probably take care of some bills and give a little bit to some of the family.”

Carolina Cash 5 tickets are $1 and drawings are held every night. Wednesday’s jackpot is $100,000.

Cash 5 is one of four lottery games in North Carolina where players have the option of buying their tickets through Online Play either through the lottery’s website or with the NC Lottery Official Mobile App.

What's going on with Lucke-Rewards? I can enter my scratch off and draw tickets, it shows I have 178 Lucke-Rewards Points but for some reason I can't figure out how to redeem them. HELP! NC Lottery
Hi Charlie, once you've earned points, you can select Lucke-Rewards Draws from Lucke-Rewards in the main menu (or Rewards in the app) to see what drawings are available and enter with your points for more chances to win! You will see a confirmation page and also be able to see your entries in your dashboard. You can request as many drawing entries as you want, provided you have enough points. There may be more than one drawing option available at a time. Prizes offered will change from time to time, so be sure to check back often to see what's new.

"where there are more people playing, there are more winners"smh. I play too much not win nothing. Quick pick, my numbers, dream numbers, fortune cookie numbers. None of which seem to get me more than a $1. If the odds are based on who is playing the most,than I should be able to change my zip code to where I think the most tickets are being bought in my state. It's not my fault that I stay in an area where ticket sells are deemed to be low. I wanna feel blessed too,and I got plenty of bills to pay.NC Lottery
Hi Tayshawn, the odds of winning are the same no matter where you are located. There are more winners in highly populated areas because more people are playing. However, if you were to move to one of those locations you would just be playing against more people, your odds of winning would not increase.

Hi Noel, we don't know ahead of time where the winning tickets will be. Where there are more people playing there will be more winners, it's just a matter of luck.
