Late father’s lucky numbers win Forsyth County man $1 million prize

Kevin Halterman of Pfafftown tried his luck on a Powerball ticket and, thanks to some lucky numbers, won a million-dollar prize.

“My dad passed away in March and he had some numbers that he used to play,” he said. “I dug them back up and I started playing them and those happened to be the numbers that hit.”

Halterman purchased his winning ticket at the Family Fare on Reynolda Road in Winston-Salem. His $2 ticket matched the numbers on all five white balls in Saturday’s drawing to beat odds of 1 in 11.6 million.

“I just figure he helped me out a lot,” said Halterman. “I’m lucky.”

He claimed his prize Monday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh and took home $707,506 after required federal and state tax withholdings.

Saturday’s Powerball drawing produced a “night of millionaires” as a ticket in New Jersey won the $23 million jackpot, eight Power Play tickets won a $2 million prize, and 35 tickets, including Halterman’s, won a $1 million prize.

Wednesday’s Powerball jackpot stands at $20 million as an annuity or $15 million cash. The odds of winning a Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292 million.

Players can buy Powerball tickets through Online Play on the lottery’s website, www.nclottery.com, with the NC Lottery Official Mobile App, or at any lottery retail location.

Last year or the year before when they changed the site I won $20.00 on Lucky for Life I got $3 dollars and because the site was redone I chated twice with Lottery workers that couldn't go back and check. Never got IT! Just took a loss if it had been more I would have fought harder.NC Lottery

I have to agree with Dorothy below. Over a week after a little $250 Cash Five win and still no deposit. A 20 minute wait for chat help yesterday, and the agent said I needed to upload ID and Voided check. That was supposed to be emailed to me if it was needed. I appreciate the need on the lottery's part to be careful, but the system needs to get quicker I think. Here's the message I got when I set up the withdrawal: "Withdrawal requests will remain pending for up to 2 business days for initial processing. We may contact you during this time if additional documentation is required. Once initial processing is complete and all required documentation has been received, please allow an additional 3-5 business days for bank processing." We are now well past that time frame.NC Lottery

So the Powerball owners paid out 74 million on just the 1 million and up on that drawing with a starting estimated 23 million jackpot? How can they afford to take that kind of hit? That is a lot to pay out and no way they sold that many tickets to cover those payouts not including the other smaller amounts. If they sold enough tickets to pay that much out, then their starting Jackpot amount should have been a lot larger. If not, then they are in the hole quite a bit?NC Lottery
Hi Jim, thanks for the question! Powerball maintains a reserve fund that is set aside for these types of occurrences. Low prize wins are settled first by each state before the Jackpot is funded. Hope that helps to answer your question. Good luck!

I just don’t understand why it takes so long to get winnings with online play. 2000 is not a lot of money that it should be taking this long. It makes you not want to play online. You can at least give the option of going to a claim center. I can only imagine if I won millions. It’s my winnings and I need it now. LolNC Lottery
Hi Dorothy, sorry about the wait. The first time you win it takes a little longer to verify all the information but after that the process should go a bit faster. However, only prizes under $99,999 must be claimed online. If you were to win $100,000 or more you would be able to claim your prize at the claims center. Thanks again for your patience!
