Randolph County mechanic wins $195,935 Cash 5 prize

Gregory Warren of Franklinville stopped for gas after work and decided to try his luck on a Cash 5 ticket that ended up winning him half of a $391,870 jackpot.

“I don’t buy lottery tickets very often,” said Warren. “It just so happens I picked a good day to buy one!”

Warren, a mechanic, bought his Quick Pick ticket for the Sept. 29 drawing from the BP on U.S. 64 East in Asheboro. He didn’t look at that ticket again until Monday night when he remembered he needed to check his numbers.

“I forgot about it,” he said Tuesday as he collected his prize at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. “I’m still kind of shocked. I didn’t get a whole lot of sleep last night. Too much excitement!”

Warren’s ticket was one of two that split the $391,870 jackpot. After required federal and state tax withholdings he took home $138,624.

He says this money may afford him the opportunity to change careers.

“I think I’m going into business for myself mowing yards,” said Warren. “I’ve got a 14-year-old son and I wanna get a business started so that he’ll have something to do when he graduates from high school.”

The second half of the jackpot was claimed by Danielle Godette of New Bern.

Cash 5 tickets are $1 with drawings held every night. Thursday’s night’s jackpot is $215,000. The odds of winning a Cash 5 jackpot are 1 in 962,598.

Cash 5 is one of four lottery games in North Carolina where players have the option of buying their tickets through Online Play either through the lottery’s website or with the NC Lottery Official Mobile App.

Ticket sales from draw games like Cash 5 make it possible for the lottery to raise more than $900 million per year for education. For details on how $8.2 million raised by the lottery made a difference in Randolph County in 2020, visit www.nclottery.com and click on the “Impact” section.

Why can't I pick my own numbers in the Cash 5 lately. It won't let you pick your own. The numbers don't appear under the box anymore even when you choose the Edit Numbers option. You only can Quick Pick. Is this a glitch or because of an update?? I'm confused NC Lottery
Hi there. We apologize for the inconvenience. Our support team is currently working on this issue and should be fix soon.

what happens to the result of September Monthly Drawing and 2021 Multiply the Cash Second Chance? It is supposed to have a winner on Oct.6 !NC Lottery
Hi, Jia, thanks for reaching out! Both draws occurred on October 6 and winners will be contacted by email within 48 hours of the draw. They will then have 30 days to claim their prize. As winners claim their prizes, their names will be added to the site for each of the draws. Hope this helps clarify things!

Hey LZ, a question. Since you're now allowing winner's pics to be taken again, why are they hiding behind the masks? Yeah, yeah, Fauci protocols, whatever. Regardless of your stance on that, you can't convince me that a winner can't safely get their picture taken without it. Stay away from them or whatever but definitely remove it for the picture. That is, unless the winners think they're acquiring a degree of anonymity? "Well, they might know my name but they DON'T know what I look like." Wouldn't be that, would it?NC Lottery
Hi, Tim! Thanks for commenting. Winners have the option of taking a picture without their mask on - you can see in some of our recent win pictures, some winners chose to take it off! We leave that up to the winner, just as we leave it up to them whether or not they want a picture in the first place, as it's not a requirement to claim a prize. Hope this helps!

Congratulations to both winners. I wish you both many more wonderful wins.

He wins on cash 5 and I get cheated on the money bags game. If number 25 had been more than one digit off I'd be ok with it, but missing the jackpot by one digit is not acceptable.NC Lottery
We're sorry to hear that, Charles. We hope your next ticket is a lucky one!
