Bobby White of Asheville tried his luck on a $20 Premier Cash scratch-off ticket and won a $2 million top prize.

White purchased his $20 Premier Cash ticket from the Citistop on Hendersonville Road in Asheville. He claimed his prize Friday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh.

White had the choice of taking an annuity of $100,000 a year for 20 years or a lump sum of $1.2 million. He chose the $1.2 million lump sum and, after required federal and state tax withholdings, took home $849,006.

The Premier Cash ticket launched in August with four top prizes of $2 million and eight $100,000 prizes. Two top prizes and five $100,000 prizes remain to be claimed.

Hey Chris "Why would someone not want almost 70,000/yr, after taxes for 20 years adding up to about 1.4 million rather than take a lump sum of under 850k? I don't really understand the reasoning and I don't think anyone could explain it to me." Let me try: One word - Inflation - aka a dollar 20 years from now will be worth no where near a dollar today. There are online calculators that will give you the Net Present Value of the $70K/year assuming various annual rates of Inflation (3%, 4%, whatever). Then compare that to taking the Lump Sum of almost $850K now and investing it safely, say in Series I Savings Bonds which, per Treasury Direct "The initial interest rate on new Series I Savings Bonds is 7.12 percent. You can buy I bonds at that rate through April 2022". After 20 years that will give you much more total money than $70K/year that will be woefully deflated and worth less and less than $70K today as each year passes.

I’ve had trouble with the holiday scratch offs too. Congrats to the winner but I believe the lottery is rigged! I believe it’s people they pick to hold up those signs with with the so called winnings on it!

Following up on your response to Annesha's question. Will his winnings be taxed again when he files his taxes for 2021?NC Lottery
Great question, Garet! This would depend on an individual's tax liability. We withhold the minimum required amount, but someone may owe more or less than what was taken out. If he owed more when filing taxes, he would have to pay the additional taxes, but winnings are not doubly taxed. Hope this helps!

I wonder if everyone is having trouble with the holiday second chance drawing or just me. I have checked my number of entries and it shows 0 entries. I have entered lots of tickets so where are my entries?

Congrats. Not sure I would give up $800k, even at my age. Any how, it looks like western NC is starting to heat up again. Now show me a little warmth....

Granted, the winners can do what they want and my opinion is just that, only mine and does not reflect anything other than an observation. Why would someone not want almost 70,000/yr, after taxes for 20 years adding up to about 1.4 million rather than take a lump sum of under 850k? I don't really understand the reasoning and I don't think anyone could explain it to me. I know what I would do but that is probably obvious based on my comment. Congratulations to the winner!

Woooooo Hoooooooo Congratulations Bobby!!!! What a great win :-)

11/16/2021 10:29 - Annesha N.

Good morning. Can someone please provide a breakdown of the taxes for this? Seems to be a lot missing.NC Lottery
Hi Annesha! The difference between the lump sum and the annuity payments accounts for the interest accrued over the 20 years of the payments. We withhold the required minimum taxes from both prizes (24% federal, 5.25% state), it's just a matter of whether it is withheld up front with the lump sum or withheld each year from annuity payments. Hope this helps!

Wow! That's awesome! Congratulations on your big win! The only thing I seem to scratch off are those pesky shavings that get everywhere in my car.
