Using same numbers for over thirty years, Huntersville banker wins $25,000 a Year for Life on Halloween

Antonios Gioulis of Huntersville has been playing the same five lottery numbers since the 1980s. This past Sunday, on Halloween night, those numbers won him a $25,000 a Year for Life prize.

“These are the numbers I randomly picked,” said Gioulis, a banker with Wells Fargo. “I just stuck with them. I played the very first lottery week in Pennsylvania with these numbers, and I won a thousand bucks.”

Gioulis said his persistence paid off on Halloween night when he decided to buy a Lucky for Life ticket using Online Play through the lottery’s website. His ticket matched all five white balls in Sunday’s drawing.

“We had a great Halloween,” said Gioulis. “The kids were coming to the house and I said, ‘What the heck, let me play the numbers.’”

Winners of the game’s second-tier prize are guaranteed $25,000 a Year for Life. The winner can also choose to claim the prize as a lump sum of $390,000. Gioulis chose the lump sum. After federal and state tax withholdings, he took home $275,926.

Gioulis, who is of Greek descent, was already planning to take a family trip to Greece next spring following his daughter’s college graduation. Now, after his big win, he said he will expand the trip to include visits to Albania and Italy to introduce his children to their Mediterranean heritage for the first time.

“We’re definitely Mediterranean and the kids have been dying to go,” said Gioulis. “This will be my chance to give them the grand tour! We’re going to go and enjoy life.”

Gioulis said he also plans on putting the bulk of his winnings towards retirement savings, as well as donating some to charity.

Lucky for Life has 10 ways to win a prize, and drawings are held every night. The top prize is $1,000 a day for the rest of your life.

Lucky for Life is one of four lottery games in North Carolina where players have the option of buying their tickets through Online Play either through the lottery’s website or with the NC Lottery Official Mobile App.

Thx LZ. I know about the group thing if the draw or scratch ticket was bought in a store. what I was wondering was , if I won a big prize online, could Myself, my wife & 3 kids claim as group and get 5 individual checks with taxes taken out.NC Lottery
Hi Denver! Yes, we would be able to process as a group with winnings from an Online Play ticket if the win is over $100,000, as it would have to be claimed in person. However, anything less would be automatically deposited into a player's online account and we could not process it separately, although the player could withdraw separate amounts from their financial institution after withdrawing the winnings. Hope this helps!

@Denver: Hi there, great questions! In general, top prizes of $1 million or more will offer winners the option of a lump sum payment or annuity payments over many years. So if a player wins $1 million, they could receive $50,000 over 20 years, or receive around $600,000 up front. The difference in value accounts for taxes and interest accrued over time - the $1 million would be like if the $600,000 sat in a bank for 20 years. As for claiming prizes as a group, an Affadavit of Group Ownership would need to be completed either at the time of the claim, or prior if not all group members will be present when claiming (in which case, one would also need to show photocopies of IDs for group members not present). Hope this helps explain things!

I was playing the same set of 5 numbers from the beginning twice a week($20)but when they started drawing 7 days a week($70)I’m only playing one set of numbers($14)a week..Thanks for saving me some money NCEL..

I tend to use same sets for cash 5 powerball and lucky for life...though I do have to modify in order to account for those higher numbers.

Well Dang, congrats to you also. Both players won with online play. One chose the lump sum , one chose the annuity. Still not sure what I would do. I would take my time deciding if ever given the choice. LZ, could you give me a short answer about online winners being able to collect as an individual or as a group? Lump sum vs annuity, what is mandatory and what is not?NC Lottery
Hi Denver, due to character limits for replies, we submitted our answers to your questions as a new comment in the thread! Hope that helps!

Quick question lucky for life started in 2009 in Connecticut. How has MR.Gioulis been playing for 30 years ? Is this a typo ?NC Lottery
Hi Michael! While Lucky for Life started in 2009, Mr. Gioulis was most likely using the same numbers with other draw games before then. Hope this helps!

I have been playing same sets of numbers for a year. Hoping I don't have to keep playing for 24 more to hit big. Congratulations on your win and enjoy your trip. That's awesome!
