Wake County man comes home from vacation to $100,000 prize

When James King of Apex got home from vacation, he found a letter in his mailbox letting him know he won $100,000 in a second-chance drawing.

“I was on vacation for two weeks,” said King. “So, we just came home a couple days ago and got our mail out of the mailbox and there was a letter there certified from the lottery. I was like, ‘What the heck is this?’”

He showed the letter to his wife, who “looked at it and got off the phone in a hurry.” The couple opened the envelope and read the letter together.

“She reads ahead of me and saw how much it was and said, ‘No way!’” he recalled. “She started jumping around going, ‘Is this real?’”

King’s entry was chosen from over 20,757,000 entries in the fourth and final 2020 Multiply the Cash second-chance drawing on Feb.3.

“We’re still smiling about this, let me tell you,” said King as he claimed his prize Friday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After required federal and state tax withholdings, he took home $70,750.

“I have kids that have student loans and we’re gonna pay off their loans and buy my son a car when he graduates in April,” said King, a retired postal worker.

Winners of second-chance drawings receive a phone call and email notifying them that they won, along with a certified letter.

“I think it’s wonderful you get a second chance to win,” said King. “It’s great because it really gives people hope that it might make their life a little bit easier.”

I found something on youtube that doesn't seem right at all. This is concerning Phil Morgan who at the time of the video had won 300 or so times with the pick 3 & 4. That can be attributed to pure luck and spending a lot of money. However, he has also won 2 major prizes in the second chance drawings. He won the Ford Mustang which I believe was one of the first second chance games and he won a trip to Las Vegas. You have millions of entries for these large prizes and many of us haven't won a thing yet this clown has won twice. I also found it very interesting that Mr. Morgan's photo was used on posters for promotional purposes. After seeing that I firmly believe that he was given one or both of those prizes in exchange for using his likeness on those posters. A link to the video is below, watch it and draw your own conclusions.

In reference to the certified letter. I am a postal worker and to verify your statement we employee sign covid19 on the certified letter and leave it at the residence, we do no face to face contact covid guidelines

Wait a minute, He was on vacation and received a certified letter? Unless the postal service has changed their rules my understanding has always been that certified mail requires a signature. NC Lottery
Hi Charles, the winner did not disclose who signed for his mail. Certified mail may require a signature upon delivery but that signature could have been provided by someone else in the household. I apologize that we aren't able to provide more details about how this winner was notified.

Why not just automatically award all future second chance big prizes to Wake county residents? That's where the majority of the winners are located. Out of 100 counties in NC I don't think it was pure coincidence that he won and the fact that it was another retired postal worker isn't coincidence either. NC Lottery
Hi Charles, we know it can be frustrating when you don't win but these drawings are overseen by an auditor and conducted using a random number generator so that the Lottery does not know who or where the winner will be. You will tend to see more winners coming from highly populated areas because more people are playing the lottery there.
