Rowan County woman scores $1 million lottery prize

Tabetha Church of Cleveland tried her luck on a $10 scratch-off and snagged a $1 million top prize.

Church purchased her winning 50X The Cash ticket from the Community Grocery on Statesville Boulevard in Cleveland.

She claimed her prize Thursday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh.

Church had the choice of taking the $1 million as an annuity of 20 payments of $50,000 a year or a lump sum of $600,000. She opted for the lump sum and took home $424,503 after required state and federal tax withholdings.

@Eugene H. The same goes for the 100x. They added more winnings but actually made that game extremely hard to win a lousy $30. I think it's fraud. I stop playing...a waste of money.

Has it always been the case for winners of top prizes on scratch off tickets to have to choose the annuity if they want the full amount they won, less taxes or take a lesser cash lump sum option? Or is that just for this specific ticket? Seems unfair NC Lottery
Hi Andrew, players have the choice between the annuity and the lump sum when they claim their prize. The difference between the lump sum and the annuity would be earned on interest over the course of 20 years. When a player chooses the annuity, the lottery uses this interest to help pay out the prize, whereas a player who chooses the lump sum would accrue this interest for themselves if they hold the lump sum in a savings account for 20 years. For those commenting on draw combinations, look at the draw on Tuesday, Apr 28, 2009. Not only is it 5 consecutive numbers, two tickets had those numbers. To comment on this 50X scratch game, it is horrible. I bought several series of 10 tickets and out of those the largest winner was $50. To make it worse several times only one ticket was winner out of 10. That is just sad.

Hi Clint, players sometimes choose the annuity but the lump sum is far more common.

This lottery is a joke, How can 111 come up within a week and some numbers hit 3 times in a 10 day period. This state lottery is corrupt.

The saga continues.Same numbers fall day after day in pick 3 and pick 4 games. They said it was coincidence but coincidences don’t happen this often. It’s really time to wise up. Last night 3884 today 4788 (only 1 number differ) this happens just too often.
