Halifax County man becomes latest $1 million Millionaire Maker winner

George Brown of Enfield was thrilled to learn he was the latest winner of a $1 million Millionaire Maker top prize.

“It’s a blessed day,” he said as he claimed his prize Friday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh.

Brown purchased his winning $30 ticket from the Bi Rite Market 6 on Sunset Avenue in Rocky Mount.

He had the option of taking the $1 million as an annuity of $50,000 a year over 20 years, or a lump sum of $600,000. Brown chose the lump sum and took home $424,509 after required federal and state tax withholdings.

Millionaire Maker is the first scratch-off to offer 30 $1 million prizes. Brown became the sixth person to win one of those $1 million prizes.

It’s good to see someone from my hometown of Enfield finally hit a million dollar prize..but it would be nicer for someone to hit a million dollar prize actually in Enfield. The fact that no one has hit a million dollar prize means there are never any there. In at least 15 years of NCEL...nothing? Meanwhile multiple cities have had multiple $1 million or more cash prizes on scratch offs. Doesnt sounds as random as one would think.

Why $1 million won or more taxes out so much compared to less than $1 million? Also, I noticed scratches off games taxes a lot more compared to draw games....NC Lottery
Hi Michael, great question! For prizes of $1 million or more, if the player chooses to take the lump sum payment, then an amount equivalent to what would accrue in interest over a 20 year period is deducted. If the player deposits the lump sum, after collecting interest for 20 years the total amount would be equivalent to the amount paid over the lifetime of the annuity option. I hope that helps to answer your question, apologies for the somewhat complicated answer.
