South Carolina couple scratches off ‘jumbo’ $1 million lottery prize

Gloria Walls and Gary Daniel of Clover, South Carolina thought they hit the jackpot months ago, until their good luck struck again to the tune of $1 million.

“About two months ago, we won $500,” recalled Walls. “We thought we hit the big time then!”

The couple purchased their winning $10 Jumbo Bucks ticket from the Harris Teeter on Robinwood Road in Gastonia.

“When I scratched off that number ‘9’ I couldn’t speak and the tears came down,” said Walls.

The couple claimed their prize Wednesday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. They had the choice of taking the $1 million as an annuity of 20 payments of $50,000 a year or a lump sum of $600,000. The couple opted for the lump sum and each took home $212,251 after required state and federal tax withholdings.

Walls and Daniel say they’re still feeling their initial reaction to the big win — shock. “We can’t believe that we did it,” said Walls.

Jumbo Bucks launched in April with eight top prizes of $1 million. Seven top prizes remain to be won.

Congratulations to the winners. OAN, why do people care so much about someone else's winnings? If I win I'm taking the lump sum!!! Yes they take alot of taxes but I don't care. If I spend $5,10,15 etc...and someone gives me millions who cares what they take. It's wayyyy more than what I had. Take what I owe and give me the change!!

This couple must have been desperate. If they had of taken the time to do the math and think about it, maybe they would have realized that by accepting the money in a lump sum they paid 70.75% in taxes leaving them $424,502.00. Where as if they had of took in annuities it would have given them a total of 707,500.00 about 35375.20 a year. They pretty much gave away 282,998. NC Lottery

Congratulations to you. I would love to see winners in my area. We get the 5, 10, 15 40, and and occasional 2-500 dollor wins. Only once was the top prize off a extreme ticket in my area. I know they say rolls are distributed with a certain amount of wins to stores but dang I spend my money too and I want to win a top prize. I want something other than gas money!!. I think I'll just keep my money in my pocket. Can't even win a freaking draw lol.

The 40% difference the interest makes up for..I don't know what bank you think acquires that much interest. Guess yall are still basing that on that fake 8% interest rate they we may have been getting in the 1980's

ok lump sum 600000-387749 in taxes is 212251 take home.....do they have nc and sc getting state taken out ? 64 % approx in taxes

I don’t think it’s right that a out of state residence can clam a North Carolina lottery prize of 100,000 or more any thing at 100,000 and up should be left for North Carolina residence only someone should change the cash in policy... I think I will call in Monday and talk to them about that and see what happens

Hi Margaret, the difference between the annuity and the lump sum is not a penalty--winners are given the choice between a $1 million payment paid out over 20 years, or a lump sum of $600,000. The 40% difference between the lump sum and the annuity would be earned on interest over the course of 20 years. When the lottery began, only annuities were offered for prizes like this. Players asked to have the choice to take a lump sum, so we began offering it. It is always up to the player to choose which one to go with. Hope this helps clear things up!
