Forsyth County man ‘in disbelief’ after $1 million win

Marvin Northrup of Lewisville made a stop for some lottery tickets and walked away the tenth winner of a $1 million Millionaire Maker top prize.

“I was at a line dance function in Salisbury and we went out to dinner,” he recalled. “After that I stopped at the convenience store and played one ticket that wasn’t any good and played the second ticket and hit it for the big money!”

Northrup purchased his winning $30 ticket from Rushco Food Stores on East Innes Street in Salisbury.

“When I scratched the ticket, I was in disbelief,” he recalled.“The number was 57 and I grabbed my chest and said, ‘Oh my God, oh my God, I can’t believe this.’ It’s wonderful.”

Northrup claimed his prize Wednesday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh.

He had the option of taking the $1 million as an annuity of $50,000 a year over 20 years, or a lump sum of $600,000. Northrup chose the lump sum of $600,000 and took home $424,509 after required federal and state tax withholdings.

Since his big win, Northrup bought himself a new car. With the rest of the prize money, he plans to use it towards a “combination of savings and investments.”

Millionaire Maker is the first scratch-off to offer 30 $1 million prizes. Northrup became the tenth person to win one of those $1 million prizes.

Kenny H.: Thanks for the great questions! The reordered Colossal Cash tickets are made to have the same odds as the original tickets. The reason that we can't provide updated odds on the website is because this number would be constantly changing as tickets are sold, and we don't know if a winning ticket has been sold until a prize is claimed, so to be accurate we can only provide the odds at the time of printing. We aren't able to provide the starting ticket number of the reordered batch, but I can tell you that the original quantity of Colossal Cash tickets was 15.84 million, and there have been two reorders of 3.96 million each. Finally, the reason for reordering the tickets is that this game is still popular with players, and we try to keep some $30 tickets available for players who like that option.

Saying the game was reordered and then only adding some of the prizes is really deceptive and borderline crooked. Either end the game or reorder with the same amount of prizes. I've always laughed at the people saying the lottery is rigged, but in this case it's definitely rigged for the lottery benefit with less prizes being supplied to the players. Hey. I’ve got questions concerning the COLOSSAL CASH. If new prizes are added could you please update the odds of winning? Also where will the added tickets numbers start? That’s the only way to know if it’s a newly ordered ticket. The public was told on the very first 30 Dollar ticket years ago that it was designed to last 3 years. Are y’all adding more tickets to stretch out this game to 3 years? These are honest questions that deserve honest answers. Please don’t give me/us an email or telephone number to a support team. These million dollar lottery ticket winners should net 1 million dollars on the win . The taxes are ridiculous more than half of their win . It could be set up that way by the NC Lottery . Also players should check with a financial planner to make sure which way to go lump sum or annuity you have time to do that . Good Luck to all players .
