Cumberland County woman scores $1 million top prize

Rose Pinkney of Fayetteville found herself the latest winner of a $1 million Colossal Cash prize.

She purchased her winning $30 ticket from the Speedway on Yadkin Road in Fayetteville.

Pinkney claimed her prize Friday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh.

She had the choice of taking her prize as an annuity of $50,000 a year for 20 years or as a lump sum of $600,000. Pinkney chose the lump sum and, after state and federal tax withholdings, took home $424,509.

Hi Linda, great question! The difference lies in the payout options for each game. For the Colossal Cash scratch-off, the winner could choose a $600K lump sum (which was then taxed) or an annuity. For a $1,000,000 Mega Millions prize there is no annuity option therefore a player wins $1,000,000 minus taxes. We hope this helps you wrap your head around the difference!
