Brunswick County woman wins first $2 million Ultimate 7's prize

Jenine Coffield of Brunswick County became the first person to win a $2 million top prize in the new Ultimate 7’s game.

Coffield, who lives in the Ash community, purchased her lucky $20 ticket from Calabash Food & Fuel on Beach Drive Southwest in Calabash.

She claimed her prize Thursday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. She had a choice of taking an annuity of $100,000 a year for 20 years or a lump sum of $1.2 million. She chose the $1.2 million lump sum and, after required federal and state tax withholdings, received $849,006.

Ultimate 7’s launched this month with four top prizes of $2 million and eight $100,000 prizes. Three top prizes and six $100,000 prizes remain to be won.

I'm happy for her, and no ill will towards anyone that has won, but I just don't understand people picking the lump sum payments. Had she taken the annuity, she would have recouped that 849,000 in 12 years and still had payments of 68,000+ for the next 8 years. Give me a shot at a 1,000,000 prize and I'd take the 34,000/yr annuity in a heart beat. That's like a 60,000 salary.
