Wake County woman unknowingly sits on $1 million top prize for six weeks

Patricia Scharville of Wake Forest left a lottery ticket worth $1 million in a drawer for six weeks before remembering to scratch it, and discovering her good luck.

“We bought tickets, put them in a drawer because we came home to eat dinner, and we just forgot about them,” she recalled. “We just scratched it off last week. It was a nice Saturday night, we were sitting on the front porch, and we thought, ‘Let’s scratch off the tickets. We feel lucky tonight!’”

She was right. Scharville and her husband went from feeling lucky to disbelief.

“I just handed it to him and said, ‘I think there’s something wrong with this ticket,’” she said. “He looked at the ticket and was like, ‘Oh my god.’ And so I was like, ‘Ok, so it’s real!’”

Scharville bought her $10 $1,000,000 Bankroll ticket at the OHM Quick Shop on Capital Boulevard in Wake Forest. She had the choice of taking the $1 million prize as an annuity of $50,000 a year for 20 years or a lump sum of $600,000. She chose the lump sum of $600,000 and took home $424,503 after required federal and state tax withholdings.

“We’ve always said we wanted to have a beach house,” said Scharville as she claimed her prize Friday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. And she might even let her two grown sons stay there from time to time, she joked.

The $1,000,000 Bankroll game launched in November 2020 with five $1 million top prizes. One remains to be won.

Ticket sales from scratch-off games make it possible for the lottery to raise more than $725 million per year for education. For details on how $62.8 million raised by the lottery made a difference in Wake County in 2020, visit www.nclottery.com and click on the “Impact” section.

@ncel. I think people are frustrated about winnings in Wake because you guys always respond with " we don't know where the winning tickets are going" but yet it seems Wake County have many big winners. You guys don't see this pattern? Maybe you guys should create a winners log with the counties and the the amount of winners for scratch offs.NC Lottery
Hi Sheila, we understand your concern. Counties with higher populations tend to have more people taking a chance to win, and therefore tend to have more winners than counties where fewer tickets are sold. This is simply a matter of statistics, not a result of the Lottery having a preference for players from a certain county. Wake County has the highest population of all counties in North Carolina, followed by Mecklenburg County, so it is no surprise that we see a relatively high number of winners from these places. I hope that helps to explain why some counties have more winners than others.

Greg S.: Hi Greg, I want you to know that I do appreciate your concerns. When tickets are reordered, we also add more prizes so that the reordered batch has the same odds as the original batch. Unfortunately, we do not know the exact odds of all tickets on the market because we do not have real time updates on how many of the original tickets remain, and we don't know when a prize has been won until a player comes forward to claim the prize. As for your idea to better publicize when a reorder occurs, that sounds like a great idea and I will make sure that the folks in charge of ticket distribution are aware. Thanks for the helpful feedback!

Wake County again. Investigation time. As if these tickets are not place in these areas intentionally.NC Lottery
Hi Dorothy, thanks for the feedback. We wanted to let you know that we don’t know where the winning tickets will be and it is no easier to win the lottery in once place over another. The triangle is a highly populated area and has many people taking a chance on the lottery. If you live in this area it is not easier to win. No matter where you live you have the same chance to beat the odds as anyone else.

Congratulations !??

Best I've done on this ticket is $15 and they get a million simply because they're in Wake County.

Congratulations on your win. I’m curious has there ever been a top prize winner in Pender County?NC Lottery
Hi Oriental, thanks for the great question. We have seen some big winners from Pender County. In April, a Pender County player won a $200,000 CA$H PLU$ top prize. Here is a link to that story: https://nclottery.com/NewsBlogDetails/2021/4/15/Pender-County-man-bags-200000-lottery-prize. Good luck!

Got a question, why is the location of winning Lucky for Life tickets not displayed on this web site?NC Lottery
Hi Frankie, thanks for the question! The locations of winning Lucky for Life tickets are posted on our Winners website here: https://nclottery.com/WinnersLuckyForLife. Sometimes there is some delay between the time of the win and the website being updated, and we apologize for that. If you follow our account on Twitter, we also post daily big winner updates there, including the locations where the winning tickets are sold.

since the $30 coll ticket was reprinted, the odds should also be updated. the new ticket plus old ticket left, changes odds on this ticket. Also lottery should announce when reprint of ticket occurs. This would make players more likely to have positive comments instead of negative being fixed like pick 3 repeating again or pick 4 repeating a couple days ago! Be transparent.NC Lottery
Hi Greg, thanks for your comment! Please see the response in the comments above, as it was too long to fit into the reply field.

I'm getting damn sick and tired of so many Wake County residents winning the top prizes and population has nothing to do with it. More top prizes tickets are being sent to Wake and the NCEL is well aware of this and refuses to address the issue.

Congratulations to you and your family. I wish you many more happy wins.

Hey NCEL how often is the winners tab updated the last update was 4/30? Is this a biweekly update type of thing ? NC Lottery
Hi Michael, we try to update the Winners website as often as possible, but the timeframe for updates is not something that is set in stone, and may fluctuate depending on how many recent big winners we have had and the schedule of the web development team. However, we are currently working on some big updates to the Winners website and we hope to be able to share that with you soon.
