Matthew Hoyes of Raleigh stopped to get his daughter a breakfast muffin, decided to try his luck on a few scratch-offs, and was treated to a $100,000 prize.
“I won $25 and I said, ‘Well, I’ll take the $25 and buy this other ticket,’” he explained. “When I saw the little 0s at the end, I was taken back a little bit. Once it really set in, I was like, ‘This is the real deal.’”
Hoyes purchased his winning Extreme Cash ticket from the Han-Dee Hugo on Creedmoor Road in Raleigh.
He says the prize money will go towards investing in his family’s future.
“My life is about my little girl,” said Hoyes. “At the end of the day it’s about what can we do together to build a stronger bond as father and daughter and what can we incorporate into our lives that we both enjoy.”
Hoyes claimed his prize Tuesday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh and took home $70,757 after required federal and state tax withholdings.
“For myself, it’s more or less trying to help others’ dreams come true,” he said. “To me, that means my little girl and how she wants to look at some farm land. And this will be a good little deposit to try to make something like that happen.”
