Scotland County man multiplies his luck to win $2 million prize

Albert Smith of Laurinburg took a chance on a 100X the Cash ticket and watched his luck multiply into a $2 million win.

Smith purchased his winning $20 ticket from the Community Mart on Andrew Jackson Highway in Laurinburg.

He claimed his prize Wednesday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh.

Smith had the choice of taking an annuity of $100,000 a year for 20 years or a lump sum of $1.2 million. He chose the $1.2 million lump sum and, after required federal and state tax withholdings, took home $849,006.

Look at his age. An 88 year old man should take the annuity of 100,000 for 20 years.? He was a very smart man and knew he wouldn’t live 20 years To see that money. He died two months after receiving his first big win like this. I love seeing how people speculate..@ Gregg. No greed in his heart!!!

@ Teresa E...it's not all taxes that eat up the prize $ on a lump sum choice. Nice if NCEL would do a video or something showing how lump sums vs annuitys work so more folks would understand the payouts. easy to not understand at first when jumping on the lottery bandwagon

The players didn't ask for a decrease in prize winnings. Main prizes on $20 dollar tickets go from $4million to 2Million. It's not okay!

Always take the annunity! In this case take the payments of 20yrs @ 100k after taxes per year you would receive around 70k then multiply x 20yrs = 1.4M vs $849,006 cash lump sum payout That`s a 550,994.00 difference A half MILLION is a lot to give up in the beginning for being greedy

@ANTAA, it's less than that because of additional taxes which need to be taken out. Probably around another 100K or so comes due at tax time.

The state takes $1,150,000 and leaves Mr. Smith with $850,000. Seems like the state won the lottery, not Mr. Smith.NC Lottery
Hi Thom, thanks for the opportunity to share more info on this! The difference between the annuity and the lump sum does not go to the state--winners are given the choice between a $2 million payment paid out over 20 years, or a lump sum of $1,200,000. The 40% difference between the lump sum and the annuity would be earned on interest over the course of 20 years. When the lottery began, only annuities were offered for prizes like this. Players asked to have the choice to take a lump sum, so we began offering it. It is always up to the player to choose which one to go with. Hope this helps clear things up!
