Wake County mom becomes latest $1 million Millionaire Maker winner

Xan Cohee of Raleigh decided to kill some time at a nearby convenience store when she tried her luck on a Millionaire Maker ticket and became the latest $1 million winner.

“I went to the gas station to get some water and wait,” she said. “And I decided to grab some lottery tickets while I was there.”

Cohee purchased her tickets from Andy Grocery on N.C. 54 East in Chapel Hill and walked outside to her car, where she scratched them off.

“I just basically couldn’t believe that it was true,” she recalled. “So, I took my app on my phone and I scanned it and it said I had to go to lottery headquarters. And then I went back into the store and asked the cashier, ‘Does this say what I think it says?’”

Cohee claimed her prize Monday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh.

She had the option of taking the $1 million as an annuity of $50,000 a year over 20 years, or a lump sum of $600,000. Cohee chose the lump sum of $600,000 and took home $424,509 after required federal and state tax withholdings.

“I’m going to set my kids up for college and beyond,” said Cohee.

She also plans to pay off her and her partner’s bills, and invest the rest so she can plan ahead for retirement.

Millionaire Maker is the first scratch-off to offer 30 $1 million prizes. Cohee became the 14th person to win one of those $1 million prizes.

Jia L said "wth...they even invent that format to prevent players from winning!!? that's super "fair" rule!" Didn't say that. With old format you could see all the current & past winners at a glance. Can't do that now . Not easy to spot & compare them now. many here talked about repeat winners. save your bucks for more sure things like food and bills.

@EDWARD H. you made me speechless, i think you spent too much and I could feel that pain! I have spent around 10k since last year in August. You even have a bit more entires than mine on 2nd chance. I feel so wasteful every time submitting 4000 or 8000 entires and got nothing!

Jia L. I was literally just sending a email saying exactly almost word for word what you just post aday ago. Only I had 93 millionaire 2chance 7,890 blooming bills month of may and 8,900 2nd chance for the three drawling of may and have logged that monthly for half a year and nodda toast stoadda. Maybe there are people logging 5x the amount we are. I know I spent 13,000 for the month of may and didn’t mis one entry I’ve spent 40,000 since November of last year and have one a 2,000 ticket this week on $2 break the bank and a $500 on 7 and two $250 and two $200 that’s the highest on 40,000 on tickets. So I think it’s about time for a new strategy.Okay I got it instead of spending 40,000 on scratch offs again over the next 6 months I’ll spend 400,000 on them that will get me that 100,000 luck rewards ??

Hi Shirley, thanks for the question. The winning numbers in the drawing were 9-7-2 and the results were verified by an independent auditor present at the drawing. @JIA L. repeat winners happen a LOT here. not as easy to spot them here like it used to be due to the new format but store owners, employees & dumpster divers put in lots of tickets here. Better chance of winning on the scratch offs vs the second chances from them. odds aren't good winning either way but fun trying...just don't spend so much trying to win on a pipe dream.

Wow again. 5& 6 big dollar winners a month or more to smaller towns average once every two to 3 years for prizes over 250 thousand. But they say it’s fair and we should accept the 500 and one thousand dollar wins we get. So I’m sharing that post to everyone I know who support the lottery in smaller towns. Hoping they will save and go to large cities to play.

Hey, NC Lottery, I found a interesting thing on your May monthly Drawing and 2nd chance on Millionaire Maker. The same guy named Cassie Irwin who won 500 and 2500 on these drawings!! I have 3393 entries on May monthyly drawing and 299 entries on Million Maker guess what, nothing!It's been 4-5 times I had up to 7000 entries on monthly drawing still win nothing. Your drawing system is so frustrating and I don't want to call it scam if I could. Also I had 3-7000 entries on 2nd chance on 2020/2021 multiply too, never ever win once!NC Lottery
Hi Jia, sorry about that. There is no rule preventing a player from winning in multiple drawings. It only takes one entry to win, and it is all a matter of luck!
