First top prize in new Cash 5 Double Play awarded

In April, we debuted Cash 5 Double Play and we’re here to share news of our first big winner!

Willie Pitts of Winston-Salem is our first winner of a $50,000 Cash 5 Double Play prize.

His good luck came when he added the $1 feature to a Cash 5 ticket he purchased from the Parkway Family Fare on University Parkway in Winston-Salem for the June 24 drawing.

After federal and state tax withholdings, Pitts took home $35,375.

Want to try your hand at Double Play?

Remember, for just $1 more per play, you can add Double Play to each individual Cash 5 play or you can Double Play all of your Cash 5 plays by checking the “Yes” box at the bottom of your play slip.*

When you opt into Double Play, the same numbers you picked in your original Cash 5 play stay in the running for the second drawing that night.

The second drawing happens every night.

Don’t forget that the prizes for the Cash 5 Double Play drawing are different too:

Match all 5 balls and win $50,000 (odds are 1 in 962,598)
Match 4 balls and win $500 (odds are 1 in 5,066)
Match 3 balls and win $12 (odds are 1 in 137)
Match 2 balls and win $3 (odds are 1 in 11.4)

I find it strange I never see anyone get 5 #s in the double play. Makes me wonder if it’s fixed . Should be same odds with 5 numbers yet I never see a 5 # winner in the double play. Strange

I don't get why you post lottery news or changes to the games ie ticket changes etc. on Facebook, I buy my tickets to hopefully win, not to support Facebook, and it stinks to even have to go on FB to look for codes for points to play Lucke-rewards! post changes or news on the official N.C.Ed site first,That is only fair to loyal players.

@ denver...the gem mines bonus game is supposed to be for the life of the tickets...something's broke here & it's still not fixed. LZ replied to you " If you did not receive the prompt after ticket entry, you might check under Points History / Digital Games to see if your Gem Mine plays are waiting for you there. Hi Tony, sorry about that. The team is working to restore the Gem Mine game for Diamond Mine and Ruby Mine tickets. Hopefully it will be available again soon. I apologize for the inconvenience.

I would like to know why i cannot enter my tickets at the ticket entry slot. When I click on the Lucke-rewards and ticket entry it sends me back to the main screen of how to play the lottery...NC Lottery
Hi Rosia, apologies for the technical difficulties. You may need to try updating to the newest version of the app. If you already have the newest version, you could also try reinstalling the app or logging out and logging back in to your account. If these actions do not resolve the problem, please call Online Play customer service at 866-934-0289 so that they can have a look at your account to diagnose the problem.

Still feel that the double play should be a either or with the drawing being just one, then only need one machine. That would take care of all questions and believe would satisfy everyone.

I played Cash 5 a week ago without the double play and had 4 numbers. I thought I won $250 but when I scanned my ticket it stated I was not a winner. NCEL shouldn't I receive the money because I matched 4 numbers? I'm a little upset at this point. I am an avid player of many of your games but never won a big payout. I guess it's telling me to stop playing the lottery.NC Lottery

I do not like the double play. Why aren’t you showing those numbers being drawn? It is probably the auditor in me, but that should all be above board and shown drawing the second set of numbers or eliminate it. How do we know how those second set of numbers are picked? So that brings up a great question. Does a computer randomly selected the double play numbers? To me there should be a second machine where the numbers are drawn and shown just like the first set.NC Lottery
Hi Jeffrey, thanks for the feedback. The Double Play drawing is conducted immediately after the regular Cash 5 drawing using the same kind of ball machine and following the same procedure. We haven't been able to broadcast this drawing due to television time constraints, but you can request video of each Double Play drawing by emailing your request to Player.Info@lotterync.net.

Hi Michael, that's completely understandable so let us break it down for you. Double Play is a new ad-on we recently added to our Cash 5 game. It is essentially a second (non-televised) drawing. It costs $1 to add Double Play and the numbers you chose for the Cash 5 base game will be entered into a second drawing. The Double Play top prize of $50,000 is won when you match all 5 numbers in the second drawing. Currently the Cash 5 Double Play can only be played at a retailer (versus online). LZ, Still not getting the prompt for the digital play nor is it in my points history like it was for the xmas tickets game. I still stand by original statement that it was a promo for JUNE only for bonus points!!!!!

Kathy L makes a good point. I went back to using play slips a long time ago because of double tickets being spit out when using a ticket to scan.

Hi Denver, there should be two ways to play the Gem Mine game. First, players get the chance to play once per week in the Earn screen. Second, players who enter a Diamond Mine or Ruby Mine ticket should be prompted to play the game during ticket entry for the lifetime of those tickets. If you did not receive the prompt after ticket entry, you might check under Points History / Digital Games to see if your Gem Mine plays are waiting for you there. Sometimes if digital games aren't working, it means that you need to update to a newer version of the app. I have also reported to the game developers that you have not been receiving the prompt upon ticket entry, and they are checking to make sure that everything is working properly.

Just curious. Why would you pay a $ for a chance to win a max prize of 50k when you could use that same $ for a chance to win the main prize, minimum 100k?NC Lottery
Hi Mike, the Double Play option offers larger prizes for matching 2, 3, or 4 numbers. It all comes down to the player's preference whether or not they prefer bigger prizes at the lower prize tiers, or if they want to take the chance on a larger top prize.

Michael B -- another possibility is they used repeat play and the machine spit it out twice when the clerk scanned it. happens often to me. NCEL, please make repeat plays able to be cancelled. I've often paid twice for the same set of numbers because of clerical or machine error.

Hi Denver, the Gem Mine game should allow players with Diamond Mine 9X and Ruby Mine 9X scratch-offs to play for Lucke-Rewards points upon ticket entry for as long as those tickets are valid.

Willie is a lucky man, congrats to him. LZ still when entering the gem mines ticket #'s don't get a chance to play the game. Not using an app, on home computer. Not a big deal , never get more than 20 pts. it seems but it's annoying.NC Lottery
Hi Tony, sorry about that. Usually when this happens it is because the app needs to be updated to a newer version, but as you are not using the app there must be another explanation.
