Jackson County woman bags $216,955 Fast Play jackpot

Kirtiben Patel of Sylva tried her luck on a Fast Play ticket on June 8 and scored a $216,955 jackpot.

Patel purchased her winning $10 Jackpot 7’s ticket while at work at the store she owns, the Holiday BP on Rufus Robinson Road in Sylva.

The odds of winning a Fast Play jackpot are 1 in 240,000. A $10 ticket receives the full jackpot amount.

Patel claimed her prize Monday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After required federal and state tax withholdings, she took home $153,499.

Fast Play’s rolling, progressive jackpot increases with every ticket sold until it is won.

Printed on each Fast Play ticket is the amount of the jackpot when the ticket is sold and how much of that jackpot the ticket could win. Players can also win instant cash prizes on their Fast Play tickets.

I dont think owners should be allowed to buy tickets at stores they own especiaply not scratchoffs.

@ Tiffany. Is that a typo??? 13k in 2weeks?? I can't even believe what I'm reading not trying to sound harsh but please be careful that's an off a lot of money to spend on lottery in two weeks on top of which your chances of winning aren't that great it's OK to do for fun but oh my gosh that's a lot of money. Like Tony said a few dollars here and there but 13k. Yikes! I feel badly for you. Sometimes people don't realize how much they're actually spending if they don't set a limit but I sure hope you win something good soon that's so sad

@ Tiffany L...that should tell you something. you're taking huge risks, especially if you needed your money badly for other SURE things like food and bills. Theres a LOT MORE chance LOSING than winning with lottery tickets. its ok to spend a buck or 2 every now and then on a ticket but think you're a bit over the top/on a slippery road.

I have spent 13 grand in lottery tickets in 2 weeks and the MOST I won was 500 ONCE at a store at Campbell College!!! I know that is INSANE, but I REALLY NEEDED MONEY AND SO I RISKED WHAT I HAD! I sure wish I could win one of the jackpot prizes! Anyone have any ideas where they may be lol?!!NC Lottery

Hi Donald, great question. The lottery does not have a rule prohibiting employees or owners of retail locations from playing the lottery. When a person with retailer association claims a prize, our security team does an extra investigation to make sure that no lottery rules have been broken.
