Cumberland County woman wins $2 million prize

Andrea Broadnax of Fayetteville plans to use part of her $2 million 100X The Cash top prize to give back.

“I do a lot of giving,” she explained. “So, I’m going to donate a lot to my favorite charity.”

Broadnax purchased her winning $20 ticket from the Tobacco Express on McArthur Road in Fayetteville.

“I couldn’t believe it,” she recalled. “I was on the phone with a friend when I was scratching it and I just kept calling her name!”

Broadnax claimed her prize Tuesday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh.

She had the choice of taking an annuity of $100,000 a year for 20 years or a lump sum of $1.2 million. Broadnax chose the $1.2 million lump sum and, after required federal and state tax withholdings, took home $849,006.

I think anybody would be jumping around but $849,000 after taxes isn't almost $1.7 million. The LOttery isn't in a shortfall of CASH and shouldn't be decreasing grand prizes. You spend $20 on a ticket I think you should be able to retire or almost retire when you hit the big one. Thanks

Hi Meredith, great question! Only the minimum State and Federal taxes are taken out of lottery prizes. Winners are given the choice between a $2 million payment paid out over 20 years, or a lump sum. The difference between the lump sum and the annuity would be earned on interest over the course of 20 years and used to pay out the $2 million prize to the winner.

@ncel. I'm starting to think scratch offs in general are being rigged. Iv never had such bad luck. Ever card I buy now have a lot of "1 offs" as winning numbers or your numbers. PI purchased 10 $5 cards and won a lousy $5. I think you guys need to be investigated
