Gerardo Rodriguez Ramirez of Siler City tried his luck on a 50X the Cash ticket and won a $1 million top prize.

Rodriguez Ramirez purchased his winning $10 ticket from the Sunrise Food & Gas on West 3rd Street in Siler City.

He claimed his prize Wednesday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. Rodriguez Ramirez had a choice of taking the $1 million as an annuity of $50,000 a year over 20 years, or a lump sum of $600,000.

He chose the lump sum of $600,000 and took home $388,500 after federal and state tax withholdings.

From the advice of Kenneth F I will make sure to get a annuity instead of a lump sum.

Why did this player receive only $388,000 where the million dollar winner in Hoke county receive $424,000? Just curious.NC Lottery
Hi Joyce, great question. Mr. Ramirez is a resident of another country so he was subject to a 30% tax withholding.

to old to think about the annuity unless it is lucky for life jackpot, I would give it to my youngest great grand kid, or grand kid that is eligible to receive it due to his or her age. They would be set for life ...

Congrats!!! Hey NC Lottery... what's the status of the "Colossal Cash" Second Chance drawing? The window for the 5th drawing started 7/1/2020 and has no updated timeframe.

Ronald T is correct about paying more taxes because of your higher yearly income....it throws you into a much higher tax bracket and you pay THOUSANDS more in taxes....I found out the hard way when I took the lump sum in 2017...also $600,000. If I had it to do all over again....DEFINITELY would take the annuity instead.

Congratulations sir! I zoomed in on that ticket attached to his big check. I don't see where it was scratched off, nor do I see the number of the ticket at bottom corner. So is this a sample ticket being used, just for the photo?NC Lottery
Hi Roger, that is just a sample ticket that is used for the big check photo.

I understand annuity vs lump sum, but it just seems wrong to be lucky enough to win ONE MILLION DOLLARS and only take home $388,500! which at the end of the year will still have to pay more taxes as its added into your yearly income??? SMH NC Lottery
Hi Ronald, thanks for the comment. The lump sum prize amount is $600,000. It becomes $388,500 after state and federal taxes have been deducted. In most cases the player would not be taxed on this prize at the end of the year as taxes were already withheld at the time the prize was claimed.
