South Carolina man becomes latest $1 million Millionaire Maker winner

Larry Hood of Fort Mill, S.C. found himself the latest winner of a $1 million Millionaire Maker prize.

Hood purchased his winning $30 ticket from the B & M Food Service on Lancaster Highway in Pineville.

He claimed his prize Wednesday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh.

Hood had the option of taking the $1 million as an annuity of $50,000 a year over 20 years, or a lump sum of $600,000. He chose the lump sum of $600,000 and took home $424,509 after required federal and state tax withholdings.

Millionaire Maker is the first scratch-off to offer 30 $1 million prizes. Hood became the 19th person to win one of those $1 million prizes.

@ncel. People are catching on to the scratch offs scheme. It doesn't make sense for people to buy several $10, $20, $30 games and win nothing or a few dollars. It's becoming a trend with you guys and people are noticing...

What a joke. $424k after taxes. He gave up $400k for a lump sum. Thats ridiculous. I mean $424k is a nice chunk of cash but who gets the $400k he gave up on the lump sum?

Maurice has a great point here,but the bottom line is the lottery IS A POOR MANS TAX!it offers false hope to the poor and middle class for the most part,very few "get struck by lightening" the way they look at it is"you dont have to play"the people of N.C.have been EXTREMELY generous to the NCEL but their not about to make the odds better.a store owner told me he had a man who bought 10 Millionaire Makers in a row and won nothing.

Please come out with a new 30 dollar ticket because these tickets is awful. On day one I purchased 8 tickets and they were all non winning tickets. It's not fair to buy all these tickets and not win at least 1 of them.
