Granville County man plays $10 ticket, scores ‘platinum’ $1 million prize

Juan Moreno of Stem tried his luck on a $10 ticket and won a shiny $1 million top prize.

Moreno purchased his winning Platinum 7s ticket from the University Drive Family Fare on University Drive in Durham.

He claimed his prize Monday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh.

Moreno had the choice of taking the $1 million prize as an annuity of $50,000 a year for 20 years or a lump sum of $600,000. He chose the lump sum of $600,000 and took home $424,503 after required federal and state tax withholdings.

Platinum 7s launched in May with five top prizes of $1 million. One top prize remains to be won.

Response to Ginger M: Hi Ginger, if a winner were to pass away, all remaining annuity payments would be paid to the winner's designated estate. Also, thanks for the feedback regarding 7's tickets! Please read my suggestion for 7 tickets also apologize for if you think negative about 2 of 7's game but it's been my experience with these... still play always hoping & I'd appreciate any info about family getting rest of annuity prize thanks! : ) HERE IT IS: CONGRATS!?? On your win I've only won $20 1 time on $20 Ultimate 7's tickets(purchased 20 x's) & won none on Platinum 7's very unusual high investment low return on this group of 7's tickets strange... so I'm grateful to see & know someone's winning Good advice Denver - I'm 63 & curious also if ever blessed to win big & took annuity & died would my family inherit the remaining years? Note to Lottery folks: I love and always play 7's tickets I have a suggestion for future 7's tickets that there be $7/$70/$700 prize amounts on games vs $5/$50/$500....be cool and really go along with the games of 7's tickets Whatcha think? I asked the question before about if you don't take lump sum and pass away and it will go to someone in your family that you choose. But for me I'll take the lump family can help me spend that I'm going to enjoy what they give me. Take what I owe and deposit my change!!!!

Congrats on your big win. Everyone has a choice, lump sum or annuity. I'm 63 still leaning toward the annuity should I be lucky enough to be given the choice. Pretty sure my estate would get any remaining monies should I not live long enough to claim the full 20 yrs. My wife kids and grand kids would have some nice extra money to enjoy One thing I see all the time , players win big and 2 days later they are claiming their prize. You have 180 days to claim, no need to rush. See an accountant & maybe a lawyer.
