Cheeseburger comes with a $1 million prize on the side for Randolph County man

September 2, 2021 Posted by NC Lottery at 2:48 PM

The desire for a good cheeseburger took Kevin Poole of Franklinville to a local grill where lunch got topped off with a $1 million lottery win.

“The electrician I work with bought me lunch yesterday,” said Poole as he claimed his prize Wednesday. “I told him, ‘since you bought mine yesterday, I’ll buy yours today.’”

Poole bought his lucky $10,000,000 Colossal Cash ticket at Don Lee’s Grocery And Grill on N.C. 50 in Willow Spring.

“They got really good cheeseburgers,” he said. “After I finished eating my cheeseburger and onion rings, I scratched it.”

He scanned the $30 ticket using his NC Lottery Official Mobile app, and it notified him to head to lottery headquarters in Raleigh.

Poole had the option of taking the $1 million as an annuity of $50,000 a year over 20 years, or a lump sum of $600,000. He chose the lump sum of $600,000 and took home $424,509 after required federal and state tax withholdings.

“I’m over excited now!” exclaimed Poole, a supervisor at an asphalt plant. “I’m building a house, and I’d like to buy more land. I want to build a motocross track out back for my sons to ride on.”

Ticket sales from scratch-offs make it possible for the lottery to raise more than $900 million per year for education. For details on how $8.2 million raised by the lottery made a difference in Randolph County in 2020, visit www.nclottery.com and click on the “Impact” section.

When it's my time from God it will go through I have to admit I do get sad when the tickets I play constantly are not winners but then goggle will pop up and the same ticket I played somebody won but the only thing you can do is be happy for them and thank God for their winnings because it's the right thing to do so from the bottom of my heart congratulations to you and your family and still remember to praise God now and forever

Who does the 400000 go to? I know not federal state because that came out the 600000 NC Lottery
Hi Nettasha, thanks for the opportunity to share more info on this! Winners are given the choice between a $1 million payment paid out over 20 years, or a lump sum. The $400,000 difference between the lump sum and the annuity would be earned on interest over the course of 20 years and used to pay out the $1 million prize to the winner. Hope this helps!

I would be ok with him winning if he wasn't from Randolph county. Since I'm also from Randolph I'm definitely not ok with it. The best I've done on this ticket is $100 and he wins 1 million. I want someone to tell me how that's fair.NC Lottery
Hi Charles, please remember that winning tickets are all random. We don't know when or when a winning ticket ends up until the lucky player comes to claim it!

Congrats!!! I was wondering, is there an incentive for posing for a picture?NC Lottery
Hi Angela, there is no incentive to pose for a winner photo. We love when big winners want to take a photo or share more info about their big win, but it’s not a requirement in order to get their prize money.
