Rowan County woman first to take home $200,000 ‘Bonus Bucks’ top prize

Karen Moxley of Salisbury tried her luck on a brand-new game and took home the first top prize of $200,000.

Moxley bought her $5 Bonus Bucks ticket from the Durga Discount Mart on Old Mocksville Road in Salisbury and claimed her prize Monday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After required federal and state tax withholdings, she took home $141,501.

The game launched this month with four $200,000 top prizes. Three remain to be won.

Ticket sales from scratch-off games make it possible for the lottery to raise more than $900 million per year for education. For details on how $7.4 million raised by the lottery made a difference in Rowan County in 2020, visit www.nclottery.com and click on the “Impact” section.

Winners of 500 on Pick 3 have to go to Lottery Office, No taxes out. So why not have the retailers pay 600.00? Instead of taking a day off of work to go there. A lot of states pay 599.00. IJS. Thanks NC Lottery
Hi Darlene, thanks for the feedback. Winners of $500, including Pick 3 winners, can claim their prize at a lottery retailer. This is the case for all prizes under $600.

What is the max that the NCEL will paid for pick 3 and pick 4. Thanks NC Lottery
Hi Harold, with a $1.00 play the top prize for Pick 3 is $500 and the top prize for Pick 4 is $5,000. The liability limit for Pick 4 is $10 million - not in sales, but in potential prize payout should a given number be drawn. The liability limit for Pick 3 is $5 million.
