Caldwell County man pockets $200,000 lottery prize

Bryan Maldonado of Lenoir tried his luck on a $5 scratch-off ticket and won a $200,000 prize.

Maldonado bought his lucky Sapphire 7s ticket from the Speedway on U.S. 70 in Hickory. He arrived at lottery headquarters on Monday to collect his prize and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $142,021.

The Sapphire 7s game launched in December with six top prizes of $200,000. Three top prizes remain to be claimed.

People need to stop playing instant scratch off tickets. The statistics mean nothing when the lottery controls the release of grand prize tickets. It is not random. When there is one grand prize left, the game typically ends early. The scam targets low-income residents and retirees.NC Lottery
Hi there, Glicerio! From our studies, people who play the lottery come from all walks of life. And our tickets are randomly distributed across our state - we don't even know where the winners are until a lucky winner scratches one off and comes to claim their prize! As for ending games with top prizes remaining, we try not to do so, but sometimes sales go down or we need to make room for newer games. If we end a game with top prizes remaining, 50% of that money goes back to players in the form of prizes, and 50% goes to education in NC! Hope this helps to clarify!

Hi there, Kathy! We see lots of good luck across our state, but some areas just have more players than others, and thus they see more frequent winners. That being said, all of our tickets are randomly distributed - we don't even know where a lucky winning ticket is until the lucky winner comes in to claim!
