Wednesday’s Powerball jackpot tops half a billion dollars

The Powerball game just crossed a major milestone as it now offers a jackpot that exceeds half a billion dollars.

Wednesday’s jackpot stands at a $508 million annuity that is worth $256.3 million in cash.

While the Powerball jackpot remains up for grabs, North Carolinians are winning lots of other prizes in the game. More than 18,000 players took home prizes in Monday’s drawing. The current Powerball run has produced over $5.7 million in prizes for players in North Carolina since it started in August.

The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292 million.

Players can buy Powerball tickets at any lottery retail location or through Online Play on the lottery’s website, www.nclottery.com.

Interest??? These draw games find anyway they can to make the odds and payouts worse for the players!!!! Add more numbers making it almost impossible to win even a few bucks.Cut the starting jackpots back because of Covid!!!Now decreasing the cash option due to interest rates. What happens when they go to 10% you get a 1/3 of the advertised prize. Come on Man!!!!

Why has Cash Value of both Powerball & Mega Millions gone down from about 75% of the Advertised Jackpot to about 50%. As an example on December 20 2021 the Powerball jackpot was $363 Million with a cash value of $265 Million. January 1st 2022 Powerball advertised $518 Million the cash value was $369 Million. The starting jackpots have gone down and Mega Millions ticket price up. Whats the deal?NC Lottery
Hi, Bruce! In both of the examples described, the cash value is around 71-73% of the annuity option. The difference in those values accounts for the interest that would be earned over the course of the annuity payments, which would be used to help pay out the prize. Additionally, the jackpot minimums are managed by the Multi-State Lottery Association, and as far as we know there are no plans to revert to the previous minimums for jackpots.
