$825 million jackpot ranks as second largest in Powerball’s history

The Powerball jackpot jumped $25 million on Friday to land at $825 million for Saturday’s drawing, the second largest jackpot in the game’s history.

Saturday’s jackpot stands at an $825 million annuity that is worth $410.2 million in cash. In the 30-year history of the Powerball game, Saturday’s jackpot lands behind only the world record $1.58 billion jackpot won in January 2016.

Not only is Saturday’s jackpot the second largest in Powerball’s history, it is the fifth largest U.S. jackpot in history. If you buy a ticket, play smart by knowing the odds. The odds of winning any Powerball prize are 1 in 24.9 and the odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292 million.

While the jackpot remains up for grabs, North Carolinians have been winning lots of other prizes as the current Powerball run has produced over $7 million in prizes for players in our state.

Why are the payouts smaller, in January of Last year the jackpot was over 1 billon and the payout was 739 million and this one is around a 1 billion also and the payout is less than 500 million?NC Lottery
Hi Harry, thanks for the question! In January, two winners split the $1.337 billion Mega Millions jackpot. The lump sum payment amount was $780.5 billion, but that amount was before tax.
