Saturday’s Powerball jackpot soars to $1.6 billion

You have a chance to make history Saturday night by winning the $1.6 billion Powerball jackpot.

The jackpot jumped $100 million on Friday to become at $1.6 billion the largest in U.S. lottery history.

If you won the jackpot, you could choose between a $1.6 billion annuity or $782.4 million in cash.

We have never seen a jackpot of this size before in the 30-year history of the Powerball game. Players dream of winning a jackpot like this. We are all hoping that a player in North Carolina sees that dream come true this Saturday night.

North Carolinians have been winning lots of other prizes in Powerball drawings. Wednesday’s Powerball drawing produced a $1 million winner, a $100,000 winner, and 11 $50,000 winners in the state. Monday’s Powerball drawing produced three $150,000 winners and three $50,000 winners.

The beauty of a record jackpot like this one is not just the life-changing opportunity to win the jackpot, but the millions of dollars that it raises for education here in North Carolina.

The current Powerball run has raised more than $26 million for education in the state. The odds of winning any Powerball prize are 1 in 24.9 and the odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292 million.

Hi, Shirley! The odds of a particular triple dropping are the same as any other combination -- exactly 1 in 1,000. Those odds never change, no matter how recently or long ago a triple came out. We love it when popular numbers come up at random, because that means our players win a bunch of prizes! But for draw games to be fair, every number has to have the same chance of being drawn!

Like Mary I cannot enter my scratch off tickets. I enter tickets the old way and have tried several different tickets to be told invalid.Your reason for the problem is good but should not be the case due to the finances that are available to avoid such a problem.Better to be proactive than reactive.

Hello NCEL Is anyone having trouble scanning tickets both for points and to check for winnings? We are having trouble with both. I’m not sure if anyone else is experiencing the same thing. I'm curious how the Powerball can go over 300 million when the odds are 1 in 292 million. Is the computer spitting out duplicate numbers? Isn't that illegal? How many different numbers were sold this last play?NC Lottery

The odds for Powerball account for the odds of matching all of the numbers in the exact order - they aren't based on where you play, what numbers are played (only that your numbers match exactly), or how many people purchase tickets. There are 292 million combinations of numbers and the odds account for the likelihood of matching all 6 of them for a drawing.

Due to the increase in volume of lucke-rewards and second-chance entries during this historic jackpot run, the system may be slower than usual when scanning. If the scan is successful, your points will be awarded though.
