Charlotte man celebrates $3 million scratch-off win

November 8, 2022 Posted by NC Lottery at 2:22 PM

Carvent Webb of Charlotte tried his luck on a $30 scratch-off and won a $3 million prize.

Webb bought his lucky Fabulous Fortune ticket from the 7-Eleven on Mallard Creek Road in Charlotte.

When Webb arrived at lottery headquarters Monday to collect his prize, he had a decision to make. He could choose to receive the prize as an annuity of $150,000 over 20 years or a lump sum of $1.8 million. He chose the lump-sum amount of $1.8 million and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $1,272,722.

Fabulous Fortune debuted in July with six $3 million prizes and 18 $100,000 prizes. Two $3 million prizes and 10 $100,000 prizes remain to be claimed.

This game has some of the most horrid odds for a $30 ticket so I never bothered to play it, but that's besides the point. Way too many of the top prize tickets no matter the price are suspiciously found in Charlotte way too often. I think they should be cut off from receiving scratch-offs for a couple of months. Hi, Jacqueline! Anywhere there are more chances being taken to win—for example Raleigh or Charlotte—the odds will play out more often there over time. You'll have a larger volume of both winning and non-winning tickets in proportion with the odds. That has no effect on the likelihood of a particular ticket winning or not winning a prize, whether it be in a big city or a small town. It has to be that way in order for the lottery to be fair to everyone.
